The Louisiana College Wildcats traveled to Shreveport on Tuesday night for a mid week double-header against the Centenary College Ladies. The Wildcats split the pair of games losing the first 4-2 but coming back to pick up the win in game two, 5-1.  The Wildcats open their conference schedule this weekend with a three game series against Concorida.

Game 1

In the opening game of the double-header the Wildcats got on the board first after a walk, stolen base, and passed ball put Shelby Bergeron at third base with 1-out in the top of the first. Three-hole batter Mattie Stine brought Bergeron in on an RBI groundout to first to put LC on top 1-0 in the top of the first. Centenary would answer in much the same way the Wildcats did in the bottom of the inning, scoring after a sacrifice and an RBI groundout to even the score after the first inning of play.

LC regained the lead two innings later thanks to a pair of Ladies errors on the same play put leadoff batter Morgan Dennis at third base with no one out in the inning. She would come around to score two batters later as Sami Walters reached on a dropped fly ball in shallow right field, to put LC back ahead 2-1 mid way through the third. The Wildcats held on to that lead until the bottom of the next inning.

Centenary plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth on two hits and one Wildcat error. A sacrifice fly plated the first run of the inning, tying the game at two, and the big blow coming on a 2-run double to right center, giving Centenary a 4-2 lead at the end of four innings. The Wildcats had chances to tie the game in their next two at-bats but Shea Smith was left stranded at second after a 2-out double, and an inning ending double play in the sixth killed any momentum the Wildcats gained.

Starting pitcher Savannah Settle went 6.0 innings giving up four hits and four runs, only one of them earned, with four strikeouts. Shea Smith and Kourtney Herrera both had doubles in the game and Shelby Bergeron went 1-for-2 with a hit, a run, and a walk in the game.

Game 2

Both teams picked up 2-out singles in their half of the first inning, and each team left their base runner stranded on the base paths. After a scoreless second inning, the Wildcats, with 2-out in the inning rallied to score four runs on five hits and a Centenary error. It started when Shelby Bergeron reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, followed by a single from Mattie Stine. Morgan Wampler singled in Bergeron, with Stine advancing to third on the throw in from right field.

Shea Smith delivered her second extra base hit of the double-header with a 2-run, 2-out triple to left center field, putting the Wildcats up 3-0. Jordan Mason brought in the final run of the inning on a single up the middle into center field and LC had a 4-0 lead in the middle of the third inning. The Ladies answered with a 1-out triple in the bottom of the inning, with the run coming in on a fielder's choice by the next batter.  That would be all the Ladies would get in the inning as Taylor Leger got a ground ball and fly out from the next two batters.

The Wildcats and Ladies got a couple hits each over the next two innings but neither were able to score any more runs, until LC and Shelby Bergeron took advantage of a pair of Centenary errors in the sixth inning. Bergeron swiped second base after and infield single, moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher, and came in to score on another error by the center fielder. Leger retired six of the next eight batters of the game for the Wildcats, securing the 5-1 win and a split of the series.

Taylor Leger pitched her first complete game of the season, going 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits, and only one run. She walked a batter and struck out another in her second win of the young season. Freshmen Taylor Hammock and Shea Smith both delivered extra base hits in the game, with Smith bringing in two RBIs on her triple.  Mattie Stine went 4-for-4 in the game and scored a run. Bergeron also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 and scoring two runs in the game.

The Wildcats open conference play this weekend with a double-header Friday and a single game Saturday against Concordia.
