Softball Takes on Howard Payne

The Louisiana College Wildcats softball team will play thier second straight road conference series this weekend as they travel to Brownwood, Texas for a three game series agaisnt Howard Payne University. The series will begin with a double-header on Friday afternoon with first pitch for game one scheduled for 1 p.m., and the finale of the series on Saturday is set for an 11 a.m. start.

The Yellow Jackets come into the third American Southwest Conference series of the season having lost seven of their last nine games. Most recently, HPU lost back-to-back run ruled games to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor last weekend. Their leading batter is sophomore pitcher/outfielder Audrey Simpson who is htting .371 on the year with five extra base hits, including one home run and nine RBI. The Yellow Jackets only have one other hitter with a batting average over .300 on the season, Tayler Rushing at .304. In the circle, three different players have pitched more than 20.0 innings this season already with Simpson going the longest at 36.0 with three complete games. All three pitchers have ERAs over 5.00 and opponents are hitting a combined .325 agaisnt the Yellow Jackets on the season.

The Wildcats are coming off a three game sweep of Ozarks last weekend, that included an 11-1 run rule win on Friday, and some late inning clutch hitting from Jordan Mason on Saturday to get the Wildcats the series sweep. LC is off to a 5-1 start in conference play and 8-2 overall. LC has five players hitting over .300 on the season with the three and four spots in the lineup, Mattie Stine and Shea Smith hitting .441 and .480 through the first 10 games. Smith had a big weekend in Arkansas, hitting the first two home runs of her career and driving in six in the 11-1 win on Friday. The Wildcats pitching staff has been excellent thus far as well, holding opponents to a .216 batting average with a 1.34 team ERA giving up an average of 1.9 runs and 5.3 hits per game. Darian Thacker and Taylor Leger have a combined 6-0 record, each with three wins this season, and Savannah Settle leads the team in strikeouts with 28 in 27.0 innings of work.

The Wildcats take on Howard Payne in the midst of a busy weekend in Brownwood, with the ASC Women's Basketball Tournament beginning on Thursday and running through Saturday. LC will play a double-header on Friday and finish the series with a single game on Saturday. Live links are available above to follow all the action from Texas.
