Huntingdon - #24 in D3football.com Top 25 Poll

The Louisiana College Wildcats will open their regular season on Saturday afternoon in a familiar place, but one they haven't seen in a while.  With only three home games in the 2015 season Wildcat Field became somewhat of an odd place for the team to play.  This year, however, the Wildcats will become well acquainted with their home turf with a total of six games in Pineville this year beginning with Saturday's regular season opener against #24 ranked Huntingdon College.

With high expectation being placed on this team to redeem its 2015, 3-7 performance, there will be no better test than a 10-2 Huntingdon team that played in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Division III playoffs last year. The Hawks we a dynamic and balance offense averaging 460.2 yards per game offensively, 244 of it on the ground and 215 through the air.  Combine that with a defense allowing 138 rushing yards, and 24 points per game and you can see why the Hawks had one of their best seasons in school history last year.

Saturday's game will feature two top level quarterbacks who are looking to make their mark on each schools record books, LC's Easton Melancon comes into his senior year with one of the most dynamic, athletic, and experienced receiving corps in the country which will help him move into second place all-time in completions and yards before the season is over.  Melancon needs 22 completions and 202 yards to pass Wes Cooper for second place in school career passing, and that could easily happen on Saturday.  Huntingdon quarterback Luke Bailey, also a senior and now three-year starter, needs only four touchdowns to become the Hawks career touchdown leader.

Bailey went 13-19 for 260 yards and four touchdowns in last years matchup between the Wildcats and the Hawks in Montgomery, AL, but this year's Wildcat defense could have something to say about Bailey setting the school record this week.  Sophomore Orel Ledet Jr., one of the centerpieces of the LC defense, along with first team all-conference cornerback Willie Smith will look to start the season with a statement and put the 2015 ASC worst in terms of yards allowed unit behind them.  Even with an experienced secondary with Ledet, Smith, Lecorey Demease, and Richard Jefferson, Jr. the game will, as it most often is, be decided at the line of scrimmage.

The front four of Kedrick Vance, Deondre Cotton, Jesse Provost, and Cade Maxwell will look to establish their dominance early and focus on containing Hawks running back John Iwaniec, a near 1,000 yard rusher in 2015. If the defensive line can control the Hawks running attack, the odds of a successful afternoon increase exponentially, especially with the talented secondary matching up with the Huntingdon receivers.

There is no better way to start off your Labor Day weekend than with Louisiana College football and seeing Easton Melancon ink his name in the second spot of the school completion and passing yards record book.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Wildcat Field on the Louisiana College campus.
