Wildcats Walk-Off to Stay Alive in Tournament

4/30/2016 6:28:00 PM

Box Score

It took extra innings once again, after a complete rainout on the second day of the 2016 ASC Tournament, but the Lady Wildcats walked off with a 2-1 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Only three runs were scored in the game between both team and two of them were in the first inning.  The Cru got on the board in the top of the first on controversial call on the base paths allowed a runner to score from third and leave the bases loaded with 1-out.  Savannah Settle would get the next two batters to strike out and the Wildcats escaped a bigger inning.

LC tied the game in the bottom of the first when a ground ball by Kayla Busby and a throwing error by the Cru shortstop allowed Alyssa Ross to score from third base.  The game remained tied at one through the next eight innings with neither team putting much of a threat together offensively.  Settle certainly took over the game for the Wildcats as Mary Hardin-Baylor would not get a single hit and only have two runners reach base after the third inning.

With the score still knotted at one in the bottom of the 9th a walk to Heather Simmons and a base hit by Regan LeJeune put runners at 1st and 2nd with 1-out.  Jade Johnson drew a pinch-hit walk to load the bases before a strike out brought Jayde Westbrook to the plate with a chance to win the game.  Westbrook who had a base hit taken away from her earlier in the game on a spectacular play by the short stop hit a dribbler bunt single right in front of the plate that allowed Ellen Bairnsfather to race home and beat the tag of the plate by the catcher for the winning run.

The Wildcats made the most of their five hits in the game and were once again solid on defense throughout the game, committing no errors in the game.  Settle picked up her 13th win of the season in perhaps her best performance of the year.

The Wildcats survive eliminations and will take on UT-Dallas for the 5th time in the last 7 days later on tonight after the conclusion of the UT-Tyler vs ETBU game.
