Wildcats Fall in 11 Innings to UT-Dallas

4/28/2016 4:10:00 PM

Box Score

A bases loaded 1-out single in the bottom of the 11th inning ended the marathon first game of the 2016 ASC Softball Tournament between Louisiana College and UT-Dallas.  Unfortunately for the Wildcats they were not the home team in game one and will face an elimination game tomorrow at 1pm.

The Lady Wildcats quickly put the disappointment of the three game sweep at the hand of the Comets just a few days ago with a 2-run top of the first.  After a walk to leadoff batter Kourtney Herrera and an error that allowed Jayde Westbrook to reach base safely, Mattie Stine drove both runners in on an infield single to second base.  In the top of the second inning Regan LeJeune hit a ball that just cleared the fence in left field to give the Wildcats a quick 3-0 lead over the Comets.

LC would go up 4-0 in the fourth on another UT-Dallas error that allowed Alyssa Ross to score from second base.  The Comets would start to work their way back into the game in bottom half of the inning on a base hit to left field to score their first run.  They would add two more in the fifth and another in the sixth to tie the game at four at the end of the sixth inning.

The score would remained tied through the seventh and into extra innings until the Wildcats would break through on a 2-out RBI single to right field by Jordan Mason to give LC the 5-4 lead midway through the 11th.  In the bottom of the inning with 1-out and the bases loaded after two singles and a walk, Comets catcher Ally Hudec was able to find the grass in centerfield to plate the tying and winning runs for UT-Dallas.

Both starting pitchers went the full game with LC's Savannah Settle allowing six runs, four of them earned, with seven strikeouts and two walks.  Mattie Stine and Jordan Mason each had two hits in the game.  Stine had two RBI and LeJuene had one on the second inning home run.

Coach Bankston was pleased with the way the team battled through the game saying it was one of the better performances he's seen out of the Lady Wildcats all season.

Bankston said, "I thought we hit the ball better than we have in a while and we felt real comfortable at the plate, just had a lot of balls hit right to people.  We showed a lot of heart and character today. We fought through a lot of adverse situations, fought through the pressure that Dallas put on us and turned it around on them.  I thought we had a great mentality all through the game and that's what you've got to have in this tournament."

The Wildcats will take on the loser of the Mary Hardin-Baylor vs UT-Tyler game in and elimination game Friday at 1pm.
