Softball Goes for #3 Seed in Final Series

4/22/2016 7:47:00 AM

For the final time in the 2016 season the Louisiana College Lady Wildcats (17-18, 15-12) softball team will take the field for a three game series.  This weekend's opponent is the third in a string of three consecutive weeks of the top teams in the conference, UT-Dallas (19-18, 15-12).  The series is set for a double-header on Friday starting at 5pm and a single game Saturday at noon.  The winner of the series will earn the #3 seed in the ASC Softball Tournament next weekend.

The Wildcats are coming off a weekend in Tyler against the #1 team in the country having lost all three games but having a real chance to beat the Patriots in each game.  They lost game one by a score or 3-1 and led 2-0 in the 6th inning of game three before Tyler took the game in extra innings.

Dallas has won their last there conference series in a row against Ozarks, Concordia, and Howard Payne outscoring their opponents 51-22 over those nine games.  As a team the Comets are fourth in the conference in batting with a .314 average in league play and fifth in pitching with a 4.46 team ERA in ASC play.

The likely pitching matchup for game one on Friday will be Savannah Settle (12-8) for LC versus Lauren McLeod (13-7) for UTD.  Both pitchers have been the clear ace for their teams through the season and have similar stats to prove that.  Both have over 120.0 innings pitched, opponents batting averages under .230, and have WHIP's around the 1.0 mark.

Runs are expected to be at a premium when Settle and McLeod are in the circle and the Wildcats will have to start having hits fall in and take advantage of runners on base and in scoring position, something that has been plaguing the team all year.

The winner of the three game series will earn the number three seed in the ASC tournament next weekend at the site of the #1 seed, UT-Tyler, and play the #6 seed in the first game of the day next Friday.  The order at the top is set with UT-Tyler and ETBU secured at one and two.  However, the positioning of teams in spots 3 through 6 will be determined this weekend.  Mathematically there are 6 teams still alive for the final 4 spots in the tournament. The Wildcats and the Comets both control their own fate for that #3 spot.

The series begins on Friday with a double-header starting at 5pm and will end with a single game Saturday at noon.  The Wildcats will celebrate and honor the four senior players, Jessica Johnson, Abby Maillet, Jade Johnson, and Ellen Bairnsfather, prior to first pitch of Saturday's game at 11:30am.
