Thacker/Stine Lead Lady Wildcats to Game 2 Win

3/15/2016 12:56:00 AM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

On a rare Monday night doubleheader the Louisiana College Lady Wildcats (13-4 (11-3)) split the first two games of a three game series with the visiting Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls (9-9 (5-9)).

The first game of the evening would turn into one of missed opportunities for the Lady Wildcats, as they would leave 10 runners on base in the game and an additional 2 others thrown out on the base paths.  Even with the slew of ducks left on the pond the Lady Wildcats still held a 3-1 lead going into the top of the 7th inning, behind a Morgan Wampler RBI single in the 1st, a Jayde Westbrook RBI single in the 2nd, and bases loaded single by pinch hitter Abby Maillet in the 5th.

If not for a 2-run homerun by Kara LeLeux in the top of the 7th with one out in the inning the Lady Wildcats may have escaped the lack of the key hit and walked away with the win.  LeLeux's homerun would spark the Cowgirls and they would tack on 2 more in the eighth inning to get the come from behind win over LC 5-3.

Savannah Settle (9-1) took her first loss of the season after allowing only 6 hits in the game, 4 of which came in the 7th and 8th innings.  Jayde Westbrook batted 2-3 with an RBI, a walk, and a run scored and Morgan Wampler went 2-4 with an RBI in the game.

After the between game break the Lady Wildcats sent the Sophomore from Jena, LA Darian Thacker to the circle for game two.  Thacker was indeed the story in game two as she would lead the Lady Wildcats to a complete game shutout victory with 7.0 innings pitched, no runs allowed, 2 hits, and 6 strikeouts.  Thacker would retire 14 batters in a row from the 2nd inning to the 6th inning and the final 21 out of 23 batters of the game.

Ellen Bairnsfather plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the second with an RBI infield single that scored Kelsey Kelly and gave LC the 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the 5th the Lady Wildcats got two more insurance runs on a Mattie Stine double into the right centerfield gap that brought around both Jayde Westbrook and Jordan Mason and gave LC the winning 3-0 edge over Hardin-Simmons in game two.  Westbrook went 2-3 in the ball game with a run scored and Mattie Stine was 3-3 with 2 RBI.

The rubber game of this three game ASC series will be played at 4pm Tuesday at Coca-Cola Wildcat Field.
