Media Game Notes

#18 East Texas Baptist Tigers vs Louisiana College Wildcats
Wildcat Field (Pineville, LA)
Start Time: 6 p.m. CST
ETBU Record: 6-1 (2-1)
LC Record: 4-3 (1-1)

All-Time Series: Wildcats lead 10-7-1
Last Meeting:  The Wildcats had their best offensive day of the season to date, racking up 442 total yards, but it was not enough for the explosive ETBU offense, who tallied 547 total yards on the night.

LC's only touchdown of the rst half came when junior defensive end Brandon Zimmer picked o a Warbington pass and took it 6-yards to the endzone for his rst career touchdown to put LC ahead 7-6 with 6:32 left in the 1st quarter. The Cats would trail 20-10 at halftime after adding a Charles Firmin field goal early in the 2nd quarter.
D'ondre Joseph would lead the Wildcats on a gutsy 17 play, 77 yard drive midway through the 3rd quarter, ending with a 4 yard touchdown run from Joseph to draw the Wildcats closer at 20-17.
    LC
would then take a 24-20 on their next possession when Joseph found junior running back Aurren Cooksey on a swing pass for a 4-yard touchdown with 22 ticks remaining in the 3rd quarter.
After a 78-yard touchdown pass by
ETBU to answer the Wildcats score, Charles Firmin tied the game at 27 on LC's next possession. But that was as close as the Cats would get the rest of the night, as ETBU took the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown to take the lead for good and eventually pull away for the 44-34 win.
    Jos
eph accounted for all three of the Wildcats' three offensive scores, throwing for 93 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 82 rushing yards and a touchdown. Cooksey led LC with 97 rushing yards while Ladarius Gardner had a team-high 7 catches for 129 yards.

"There's No Place Like Home", that is the theme of the weekend for Louisiana College's 2016 Homecoming weekend. Historically home games have been kind to the Wildcats, especially the final home games of the season.  Since the program restarted in the year 2000, LC is 11-5 in their final games at Wildcat Field, and have won the last four home finales in a row. The Wildcats will have perhaps their biggest test in this year's home finale as the #18 ranked East Texas Baptist Tigers come to Wildcat Field looking to spoil the homecoming festivities.

The Wildcats have faced some high powered offenses at home this season, in Hardin-Simmons and Belhaven, but nothing like the dynamic attack of ETBU.  The Tigers are the top ranked offense in all of NCAA Division III, averaging 590.6 yards per game, and they don't just move the ball between the 20's, they also boast the highest scoring team in Division III as well with 55.3 points per game this season.  They have two of the highest single game point totals in the country this season, an 85 point game against SW Assemblies of God and a 76 point game just last week against Howard Payne.

The Tigers are led by junior quarterback Dru Smith, who is third in the ASC in passing  yards but leads the conference in passing touchdowns with 23 scores this season. He has a talented group of receivers that include Louisiana native, Chase Sojka, and Richard Johnson. Both rank in the top 10 in the ASC in receiving yards and Sojka has led the conference for most of the season but now ranks second in yards behind Belhaven's Lamiquell Roberts.  Much like last week the Wildcat defense will have their hands full in the passing game.  Although they allowed over 600 yards of offense to the Blazers, they were held to minimal scoring and created more chances for Easton Melancon and the LC offense with five takeaways.  The fast paced Tigers hope to get opponents out of position to create open space for their play makers down the field. The key for the Wildcats will be to win on first and second down to force the Tigers into longer third down chances.

After two weeks of inconsistent drives and failures to capitalize on scoring opportunities, the LC offense seemed to have more rhythm and flow in last week's victory over Belhaven. Although Melancon only threw for 290 yards, his second lowest total of the year, the senior had his first interception free game since the victory over Texas Lutheran in the second week of the season.  Seven different players caught passes in the game and the team combined for 247 rushing yards, the most this season.  The combination of Aurren Cooksey and the introduction of the "Wildcat" package with quarterback D'Ondre Joseph creates a different dynamic for opposing defenses to contend against.

ETBU ranks sixth in the ASC in total defense, allowing 428.0 yards per game.  They have a talented group of linebackers that make a lot of plays at and around the line of scrimmage. It will be important for the LC offensive line to get to the second level and open running lanes for ASC rushing leader Aurren Cooksey.  If the Wildcats are able to have a balanced attack like the one they displayed last week against Belhaven, they are one of the most difficult and explosive units in the country.

The 2016 Battle for the Border Claw shapes up to be another classic matchup in the series.  Over the course of 16 games played since 2000 between these two rivals, nine games have been decided by a touchdown or less, with the Wildcats holding a slim 5-4 advantage in those games.

Prior to the game Louisiana College will honor 17 football players and student coaches, as well as five cheerleaders in a senior recognition ceremony.  This will be the final home game for a talented and special group of players that have invested so much time and energy into making LC football what it is over the past four years.  For a list of players and the thing they will remember most about playing football at LC visit lcwildcats.net/SrNotes.

Homecoming festivities will begin at 9am on Saturday morning with the color run through campus and continue throughout the day.  The homecoming parade will begin at 3pm along with the tailgate parties around campus. Kickoff is scheduled for 6pm, after the presentation of the seniors and the homecoming court will be introduced at halftime.
