The Lady Cats won in walk-off fashion, as freshman centerfielder
Heather Simmons' RBI fielder's choice with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning ended the close game and secured LC's spot in the ASC Tournament.
LC would get their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when senior catcher
Courtney Ivey led off the inning with a walk and eventually scored when she stole home while third baseman Regan Lejeune was caught in a run down between first and second base to give the Lady Cats the early 1-0 lead.
UMHB would tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth when third baseman Leah Brown laced an RBI double to centerfield to lead off the inning and was brought around to score two batters later on an RBI sac fly to deep left field by shortstop Myranda Hinojosa.
But LC would not be denied in the seventh inning, as senior designated player
Kate Hines led off the bottom half of the inning with a single to left field before being pinch ran for by JaydeWestbrook. Westbrook would advance to second on a wild pitch and then to third base on a sac bunt by Lejeune.
Simmons would take care of the rest, as her groundball to Hinojosa at shortstop was enough to give Westbrook time to slide underneath the tag of UMHB catcher Jordan Hughes and give LC the 2-1 win in walk-off fashion.
LC freshman pitcher
Darian Thacker picked up the win after working the final three innings in relief off freshman starter
Savannah Settle, who extended her scoreless inning streak at home to 32 after tossing four scoreless frames to start off the game being giving way to Thacker, who was outstanding in relief for the second consecutive day.
LC right fielder Ellen Bairsnfather led the Lady Cats at the plate by 2-for-2 on the day.
The Lady Cats move to 26-8 overall with a 21-5 mark in ASC play with the sweep of UMHB. LC will have one day off before preparing for a showdown with #2 Texas-Tyler (34-1, 26-1) beginning on Friday at 5:00 p.m., weather permitting.Â
