The Louisiana College softball team, ranked 22nd in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Poll, split their Friday doubleheader against the Blugolds of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, winning game one 1-0 before falling in game two 8-0 via run rule at Coca-Cola Field in Pineville.

Game one was highlighted by a pitchers' duel between LC freshman right-hander Savannah Settle and UWEC's Zana Lorbetske, as both started the game off with five scoreless frames a piece before the Lady Cats were finally able to scratch a late run across to clinch the win.

With Settle throwing up zero after zero on the scoreboard against a tough hitting Blugolds squad, LC was also held in check by Lorbetske, who struck out nine and gave up just two hits in her first five innings of work. But the Lady Cats pulled off a bold move in the bottom of the sixth, as head coach Mark Rosier, with Emorie Nugent standing on second base with one out, decided to pinch hit freshman Mattie Stine in favor of senior shortstop and three-hole hitter Laura Gulotta-Parrish.

The move paid off in a huge way, as Stine went to the opposite field for a clutch RBI double that bounced just inches inside of the left field line to score Nugent and give LC a 1-0 lead, their first of the day.

Settle would handle things from there, as she made quick work of UWEC in the top of seventh to complete another gem, as the freshman finished the game by giving up just three hits, walking one, and striking out four to record her third complete game shutout of the season.

Nugent led LC at the plate in game one, as she collected two of her team's four hits.

Game two featured yet another impressive pitching performance from UWEC, as starter Lauren Blasczyk went all five innings and gave up just one hit, which came in the bottom of the second inning to LC junior designated player Abby Maillet. Blasczyk faced just 16 batters, one over the minimum, in the complete game shutout performance.

UWEC third baseman Amanda Fischer was the key clog in the Blugolds lineup, as she went 2-for-3 with a two run home run and three runs scored.

The Lady Cats sit at 14-4 overall with a 12-2 mark in American Southwest Conference play. They will continue with their non-conference schedule as they are scheduled to play St. Olaf College next Monday in a doubleheader followed by another non-conference doubleheader against Trinity University next Tuesday. All four of those games will be played in San Antonio, Texas.
