Softball splits Sunday doubleheader with Texas-Dallas

2/16/2014 7:30:00 PM

After an impressive season debut on Saturday night, the Louisiana College softball team split a rare Sunday doubleheader with ASC opponent Texas-Dallas, winning game one 5-3 before dropping game two 6-3.

Game One Box Score

Texas-Dallas struck first in the top of the third inning with a Jordan Bratcher RBI triple that scored Morgan Anderson. Bratcher then came home on a Robin Thomas RBI sac fly to left field to give the Comets a 2-0 lead.

The Comets would add another run in the top of the fourth when Jessica Ramos stepped to the plate and hit a long home run over the left field wall to give UTD a three run cushion.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, LC freshman Kimber Kruehl came in to pinch hit for Chelsea Allen and delivered her first career hit, a sharp RBI single down the left field line to plate Courtney Ivey. LC leadoff hitter Emorie Nugent then lined a single up the middle into centerfield to bring home two runs and tie the game at 3-3.

LC would then jump out in front for the first time all day when Courtney Ivey was walked and followed by a long two-run home run over the left field wall by junior third baseman Laura Gulotta-Parrish to give the Lady Cats a 5-3 lead.

Sophomore pitcher Nancy Bunting came in relief for the third game in a row, earning the win after tossing three scoreless frames in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning. Bunting came in relief after freshman starter Taylor Leger threw four innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs.

Game Two Box Score

LC sophomore pitcher Madison Vige got the start in game two and was perfect through four innings, but a leadoff walk Jessica Ramos followed by a Madison Edwards double just two batters later gave the Comets the first score of the game and a 1-0 lead.

UTD's Avery McHugh then brought home pinch runner Kendall Moore on an error by LC second baseman Stephanie Jaeger to give the Comets a two-run cushion.

Jessica Ramos struck again in the top of the sixth inning when she laced an RBI single to centerfield that scored Jordan Bratcher after Bratcher reached on an error to make the score 3-0. Edwards followed with an RBI single two batters later off LC relief pitcher Abby Maillet.

Chelsea Sartor gave the Comets their final runs of the game with a two-run single down the left field that narrowly slipped by LC third baseman Mallory Boudreaux's diving attempt.

LC would add three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and have the tying run at the plate with two outs , but a Meagan Pearson ground out to third base ended the rally and gave the Comets their lone win of the weekend.

Vige was tagged with the loss in game two to drop to 0-1 on the year despite having a perfect game going into the fifth inning.

LC finished the weekend 3-1 overall, and with the second game on Sunday's doubleheader not counting as an ASC contest, the Lady Cats own a perfect 3-0 conference record after the first weekend of the regular season.
