Lady Wildcats fall to Division 1 opponent Southern University 2-1

Box Score

Played in the middle of a torrential downpour, the Louisiana College Lady Wildcats played perhaps their cleanest offensive match of the season, but a controversial ending left the Lady Cats on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision to Division 1 opponent Southern University.

The Lady Wildcats appeared to have the upperhand early, getting two very good looks at goals, the first coming by way of a header by Erin Biggs in 12th minute off of a beautiful corner kick from Anna Champagne. That shot would hit the top of the crossbar, however, marking the first missed opportunity for LC to take an early lead.

Champagne would again be involved in another potential scoring play just six minutes later when she rifled a shot off of a free kick that was saved by Southern goalie Kerrin Hall.

With LC struggling to find the back of the net despite multiple good looks, the Lady Jaguars were able to take advantage in 23rd minute when Lyen Martinez scored in a crowd near the goal after a corner kick Aleia Longoria was deflected several times, which gave Southern a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Looking to tie the match after the half, LC sophomore forward Taylor Bergeron broke away from the Lady Jaguar defense in the 63rd minute, but was unable to finish as her shot went wide.

Bergeron would answer back, however, as she was able to score her sixth goal of the season six minutes later, handling a cross before sending a laser into the back of the net to tie the match and giving the Lady Cats new life.

Southern's team speed would then be put on display in the 82nd minute, as Lady Jaguar forward Jami Blackston broke free from the LC defense, taking the ball by herself from midfield before slamming home the go-ahead goal to make the score 2-1.

LC would then be victimized with a controversial no-call with just three minutes left to play, when forward Sara Smith appeared to be taken down while attempting to score the game-tying goal. But with the call not being made, the Lady Jaguars were able to regain possession and deny the Lady Cats any further opportunities to tie, coming away with a 2-1 victory in some of the roughest conditions ever played in at Wildcat Field.

The Lady Wildcats now sit at 2-5 on the season despite playing some of their best soccer as of late. However, that record will essentially be thrown out of the window next Friday as LC will take on Concordia in their ASC opener at 2 p.m. in Austin, TX.
