Box Score
PINEVILLE, LA - For the Louisiana College Wildcats, their second game of the 2013 season saw them beating Webber International in virtually every statistical category except three – turnovers, penalties, and until the game's final minute – the score.
But when senior running back
Reggie Sims took the ball across the goal line from two yards out with 29 seconds left, it gave the Wildcats a come-from-behind 16-12 win in a game where mistakes haunted LC all day long.
The Wildcats, who committed 12 penalties for 171 yards, lost two fumbles and threw three interceptions, improved to 2-0 before 2,641 fans at Wildcats Stadium. The Warriors fell to 1-2.
Sims' deciding score was the only offensive touchdown in the game that saw Webber with a bend-but-don't-break approach that yielded a combined 468 yards, while LC's defense would hold the Warriors' offense to just 177 yards.
Despite their struggles on offense, the Wildcats took a 9-6 lead with 4:59 left in the third quarter on a 26-yard field goal from
Adan Olivares – one of three field goals on the day for Olivares that included a school record 49-yard kick as the first half came to an end.
In the 4
th quarter, the Wildcats missed a chance to solidify their lead when a 14-play, 76-yard drive ended with
Ryan Montague fumbling the ball into the end zone for a touchback. It was a rare fumble for the senior who finished with 58 yards on 15 carries though he had a 44-yard run brought back by one of LC's many penalties.
On LC's next drive of the game, freshman quarterback
Easton Melancon, who came into the game in relief of the struggling
Alonzo Bellamy late in the second quarter, made his only big mistake of the game when his pass was intercepted by Webber International's Daniel Booth. Booth returned the pass 65 yards for the score to put Webber back into the lead, 12-9, with 11:24 to play before a stunned home crowd.
The Wildcats had the chance to tie the game on their next drive, but Olivares missed his only field goal attempt of the day in four tries with 8:26 left in the fourth quarter.
But, the story of the game, the LC defense shut down Webber's next drive in six plays and gave the LC offense one final chance with 4:52 to play.
Melancon quickly got the Cats on the move. A completion to freshman Sheddrick Davis, who filled in for the injured
Ladarius Gardner, for 16 yards would put LC at the Webber 47. Davis led LC with 99 yards on five catches.
It looked as though the drive might end for the Wildcats, however, when Melancon's pass to
Jonathan Dixon was incomplete leaving LC with a 4
th and 20 at the Webber 36.
Following a timeout, the Wildcats needed the first down or the game would likely be over. Melancon found
Kyle Galyon who needed 20 yards and got 22 to keep the drive alive at the Webber 14. Four plays later, Sims blasted in for what proved to be the winnings score. Galyon was LC's second leading receiver with 92 yards on six receptions. Sims, Montague and sophomore
Percy Johnson all contributed to LC's 191 yards rushing.
Melancon, who showed some first game jitters a week earlier against Belhaven, finished his second game with 230 yards on 16-for-37 passing. Bellamy was 8-of-16 for 47 yards, but lost one fumble and threw two interceptions that landed him on the bench late in the second quarter for the rest of the game.
Webber International quarterback Cameron Joseph finished 7-for-20 for 98 yards and found himself sacked four times by the LC defense. Brendan Deshiel was Webber's leading rusher with 41 yards on 16 caries.
Defensively, the Wildcats were led by junior
Preston Thibeaux's eight tackles that included one sack. Senior
Dominic Graham had 6.5 tackles, sophomore Joey Jarreau had six tackles and one sack, and junior
Grayson Pylant also finished with six tackles.
The Wildcats will play their final non-conference game of 2013 next Saturday, Sept. 21, when they travel to Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.
