The Louisiana College Lady Wildcats, coming off perhaps their best fall camp under fourth year head coach
Bruce Deaton, took a tough 2-0 loss in their season opener to Central Baptist on Friday afternoon in Conway, AR.
Â
The LC defense, led by
Anna Champagne and
Ashlee Dubra, was outstanding as they were much of the 2012 season, yielding just four shots on goal during the match and holding Central Baptist scoreless through the first 50 minutes of the contest.
Â
However, the Mustangs were able to break through five minutes into the second period when Lexie Lewis scored off an assist from Tarra Hendricks to give Central Baptist a 1-0 lead.
Â
Kensey Morris would then add another goal at the 67 minute mark to give the Mustangs the 2-0 lead, which was the eventual final tally.
Â
"I'm disappointed in the outcome, but definitely not disappointed in this team," said Deaton, "we created some good opportunities for ourselves and just did not finish those."
Â
For the Lady Wildcats, those opportunities came in the form of 15 total shots, nine of which were shots on goal compared the four shots on goal by Central Baptist.
Â
Those areas, along with the focus and enthusiasm of this season's squad, are two aspects that has Deaton optimistic.
Â
"I'm excited about the level of this team right now, and we will grow from what we saw today," said Deaton, ",we need to be a bit more aggressive when possession changes and more crisp with our passes, but that will come as the season progresses."
Â
The Lady Wildcats will have a short break before taking the field Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. against Hendrix College.Â
