The Louisiana College men's soccer team made even more history on Thursday afternoon in Abilene, TX, as a last minute penalty kick goal from
Fellipe Albuquerque sealed a 3-2 win over the East Texas Baptist Tigers to give the Wildcats a win in their first-ever ASC Tournament appearance.
After one scoreless overtime period, ETBU was called for a handball inside the box in the 109
th minute of the match. Albuquerque, who has been LC's most consistent goal scorer over the past two seasons, provided the drama as he nailed the penalty kick, sealing the win for LC.
LC took the first lead of the game as freshman standout
Rodrigo Neves scored off an assist from
Phillip Borde and Nicholas Montz in the 26
th minute.
The Cats would take that lead to halftime, but ETBU was able to tie the match 1-1 when Juan Ramirez drilled a free kick into the net from just outside the box in the 67
th minute. LC would answer immediately and appear to take control when
Greg McDoom scored in the 74
th minute off an assist from
Caio Sousa to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
However, a red card on LC senior
Raffi Ferreira would give ETBU an opportunity to tie the match again in the 82
nd minute with a free kick. Justin Adams was able to score on the kick, sending the match to overtime in a dramatic finish to regulation.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Wildcats' conditioning took over in the final overtime, as LC was dominant in the final 10 minutes. The Tigers were unwilling to give in, however, and appeared to be on their way to closing out another scoreless overtime period.
However, the handball call gave LC just the opportunity they needed to finish the match, and Albuquerque's sixth goal of the season was the dagger.
The Wildcats (10-8-1) will now move on to face #1 seed and host team Hardin-Simmons, who received a 1
st round bye, in tomorrow's first semi-final match beginning at 11 a.m.
