The Louisiana College men's soccer team took another big step towards reaching their first-ever ASC Tournament appearance with a 3-1 road win over rival East Texas Baptist on Thursday night in Marshall, TX.
The Wildcats struck first in the 11
th minute when ETBU goalie Cody Hopson was unable to stop a shot from
Caio Sousa despite getting his hands on the ball. It was Sousa's team-leading sixth goal of the season and gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
ETBU would tie the match in the 21
st minute with a goal from Jorge Carreon, but freshman
Greg McDoom would answer that with a goal in the 40
th minute off of an assist from
Fellipe Albuquerque to give LC a 2-1 lead before halftime.
In the 78
th minute Albuquerque would get loose and fire a shot that was deflected by Hopson, but
Kevin Mayorga was right there to grab the deflected shot and lob it over Hopson to give LC the 3-1 lead, which was the eventual final score.
The win moved LC's record to 8-7 on the year, which is a new school record for most wins in a single-season by the LC men's program, beating the previous record of 7 set a season ago. More importantly, the 3-1 win puts LC alone in 3
rd place in the ASC standings, just behind Texas-Dallas and Mississippi College.
LC will have a chance to improve their postseason fate when Texas-Dallas comes to Pineville for a 7:00 PM matchup against the Wildcats in Wildcat Stadium next Thursday, a game that will have big implications on the ASC Tournament seedings.
