A nail-biting finish marked the Louisiana College Lady Wildcats' 2-1 win over Howard Payne on Saturday afternoon in Brownwood, TX, as LC was able to grab their first road win of the season and keep themselves in contention for their first-ever ASC Tournament appearance.
The Lady Cats were able to survive a scoreless first half in which they were outshot 17-1 and did not take a corner kick compared to eight for HPU. An outstanding first half from LC keeper Danielle Paulson, where she stopped on 10 shots on target from the Lady Jackets, proved to be the key difference in holding off HPU in the first 45 minutes.
LC would breakthrough and get on the board in the 56
th minute with a goal from junior
Pamela Usry that gave the Lady Cats a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Jackets would not let LC seize the momentum, however, as Stephanie Boggs immediately answered with the tying goal in the 59
th minute off of a free kick after a foul was called on the Lady Wildcats.
Both defenses would put in a spirited effort from that point on, but it was the Lady Wildcats who would have the defining moment on Saturday, as
Haley Parsons was able to score off of an Usry assist in the 85
th minute for the match-clinching goal that put LC ahead for good 2-1.
The win was LC's first over Howard Payne since 2006 and moved their season record to 4-8 and 2-3 in ASC play, which keeps their goal of reaching the 2013 ASC Tournament firmly in their sights. They will look t pull their conference record to .500 when they hit the road next Thursday to take on ETBU on Marshall, TX at 5 PM.
