When Edwards Atkins drilled home a jumper from the top of the key to give Louisiana College a 44-33 lead with 14 minutes left in the second half of Thursday's game against Texas Lutheran, it appeared the Wildcats had all but seized the momentum necessary to lead them to their second win of the season.
While they did end up walking away with an incredible 59-57 victory over the Bulldogs, it would not come easy for LC, as Atkins field goal was the last points the Wildcats would sniff until the 4 minute mark of regulation.
After claiming the 11-point lead, LC would allow TLU to go on an 26-8 run (including 18 unanswered points) and take a 57-52 lead with under 2 minutes left. That would set the stage for one of the most dramatic finishes ever seen during the extensive tenure of legendary Wildcats' head coach
Gene Rushing.
With the Wildcats needing an answer in order to capture their first home victory of the season, senior
Danny Sumner nailed a 3-pointer right in front of LC's bench to bring LC within a basket, 57-55.
Senior
Derrick Gardner would then come up with a huge steal, give the ball up to
Edward Atkins, who fed freshman
Kevin Cottonham on the right wing for a go-ahead 3-pointer.
Gardner would then add another free throw to make it 59-57 following a turnover by TLU's Evan Reed.
It was the signature performance of the season for both Cottonham and Sumner, who combined to shoot a 6-9 from beyond the arc for the contest. Sumner finished with 14 points and 3 rebounds while Cottonham scored 13 points, grabbed 3 rebounds, and dished out 3 assists.
The win moved LC to 2-6 on the season, 2-4 in ASC play. The Wildcats will have two more opportunities to defend their home court during the next week, as Schreiner comes in for a 3 p.m. matchup on Saturday before longtime rival Mississippi College comes to Pineville on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. showdown.
