The Louisiana College men's basketball team , fighting for their playoff life on the road in Tyler, Tx., dropped a heart breaking 80-75 overtime decision to the UT-Tyler Patriots on Thursday night in the Louise Herrington Patriot Center.
After leading at halftime, and as many as 10 points in the second half, the Wildcats were unable to hold off a late charge from the Patriots, as Jordan Cannon hit a game-tying three-pointer with six seconds remaining in regulation.
The Wildcats went on to hold a 73-72 lead with just over two minutes left in overtime before the Patriots' Joe Stephens hit a three-pointer that would prove to be the difference in the end.
The loss came on a very clean night of basketball in the open court for LC, as they turned the ball over just seven times. However, a 35.7% shooting performance from the field (25-70) was the downfall for the Wildcats.
All five of LC's starters scored in double digits, with
Kevin Cottonham and
Doc Welch leading the way with 13 points a piece.
Derrick Gardner had one of his best games all season, as he ended with 12 points on 5-7 shooting, 14 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
Danny Sumner (12 points, 4 rebounds) and
Anthony Gaines, Jr. (10 points, 3 rebounds) also reached double figures for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats (5-9, 5-7) now face a virtual must-win scenario against East Texas Baptist on Saturday. That game will begin at 3 p.m. in Marshall, Tx.
