Sara Smith watches her potential game tying goal come up just short against HPU

Lady Wildcats fall to Howard Payne 1-0

9/23/2012 3:48:00 PM

A scheduling issue earlier in the week caused the Lady Wildcats' soccer team to take on Howard Payne Saturday morning at 11 a.m. instead of Friday night as previously scheduled.

The effects of that scheduling issue became apparent very early in Saturday's match.

Multiple players for both teams were forced to exit the game with heat exhaustion and hydration issues due to the high temperatures at Wildcat Field. Despite the heat, LC was able to fight back from a 1-0 deficit and put themselves in a position to tie the match late.

Down 1-0 in the 2nd half, LC forward Sara Smith broke away past the HPU defense and sent a laser that would have tied the match. However, HPU goalie Adrienne Walker came up with an outstanding save to prevent Smith from tying the match. The Lady Wildcats would get a few more opportunities late, but were unable to score and were eventually downed by the Lady Yellow Jacket 1-0.

The loss drops the Lady Wildcats record to 3-5 on the season, 0-2 in the American Southwest Conference. The good news for Bruce Deaton's squad? They go on the road next week to take on Texas Lutheran in Sequin, Tx. The Lady Wildcats have been much better on the road than at home this year, going 3-1 away from Wildcat Field on the season.
