It is safe to say that
Bruce Deaton and
Prince Borde have their respective soccer teams off to fast starts
Coming off of a stretch where the Lady Wildcats won only four games in four years, the Louisiana College women's team currently sits at 3-1 after two match victories this past weekend over Dallas Christian and Southwest Assemblies of God (SAGU). The 3-1 start is the best in school history, and LC's win total through four games already surpasses their win total from a season ago, when they finished with a 2-17 record.
Not to be outdone,
Prince Borde has his men's soccer team off to an undefeated 3-0 start, as they also downed Dallas Christian and SAGU over the weekend by scores of 3-0 and 3-2, respectively. The three wins equal the Wildcats 2011 total, as they finished the seaosn 3-14-1.
The LC women kicked off the action on Friday when they recorded a 5-0 match victory over Dallas Christian. Prior to that match, the Lady Wildcats had not scored five goals in a single match since 2007, when they defeated Central Baptist 5-0. Two goals were scored by
Taylor Bergeron (off assists from
Alex Corne and
Kelley Clancey), two by Clancey (one off an assists from
Brandi Martin), and one by
Ashlee Dubra.
Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of that victory is that every point of that match was recorded by member's of Deaton's highly touted recruiting class.
The LC men followed the women on Friday with a 3-0 shutout of Dallas Christian. Fellippe Albuquerque,
Raffi Ferreira, and
Caio Sousa all scored, with
James Cox and Peter McClean being credited with an assist each.
The action picked back up on Saturday with the women recording their third consecutive shutout in a 2-0 blanking of SAGU. It was keeper
Emily Breaux's third shutout of the young season in only four games. The two goals were scored by
Sara Smith and
Taylor Bergeron. Proving that the program has improved drastically during Deaton's tenure, Bergeron's season goal total of three surpasses the total for the entire team during the 2010 season, when they scored two goals in 18 games that season.
The men rounded out the weekend with a thrilling 3-2 victory of SAGU. Sousa scored two goals, including the game winner, and Albuquerque continued his outstanding early season play, recording his fourth goal in only three games. Ferreira and
Edwin Morales both assisted on goals.
With the two wins, both programs must now turn their attention towards American Southwest Conference opponent Missisippi College. The women take on MC at 4 p.m., followed by the men at 6 p.m.
