Softball opens ASC East Play with sweep of LeTourneau

PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana College softball team started American Southwest Conference East Division play with a bang, toughing out a pair of close wins in a doubleheader against LeTourneau.

LC (9-1, 2-0 ASC East) extended its early-season win streak to seven games with wins of 4-2 and 2-1 over LeTourneau (3-5, 0-2 ASC East).

In both games, the Lady Cats were able secure late wins in their last at-bat.

In the first contest, with the score tied 2-2, LC scored two runs in the sixth inning on a single by junior leadoff batter and right fielder Meggie Burkett (West Monroe, La./West Ouachita HS).

Burkett finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Junior shortstop Daniele Wilson (Destrehan, La./Archbishop Chappelle) went 2-for-3.

Junior pitcher Jordan Waldroup (Calhoun, La./West Ouachita HS) got the win and improved to 4-1 after hurling a three-hitter. Waldroup, who had pitched a one-hitter in her previous outing, struck out three in the contest.

Taylor Thibodeaux (3-3) took the loss for LeTourneau in the first contest.

In the late game, the Lady Cats were held to one hit through the first four innings by LeTourneau's Kelli Parton but were able to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI by Burkett the win the game on a walk-off RBI single by senior outfielder Cassie DeCoste (Pineville, La./Pineville HS).

Burkett and DeCoste each went 1-for-3 in the second contest.

Freshman Rudi Aycock (Olla, La./LaSalle HS/Bossier Parish CC), making her first appearance of the year, got the win for LC, pitching all seven innings and striking out two while walking a pair.

LC returns to action this Saturday at 1 p.m. with a visit to rival East Texas Baptist.
