Wildcats fall to UMHB 2-1 in pivotal ASC contest

10/20/2012 11:33:00 PM

Celebrating Senior Day, the Louisiana College men's soccer team was looking to pull off the upset against Mary Hardin-Baylor, who entered the contest with an 8-1-1 record in the American Southwest Conference, on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Field.

Not surprisingly, the Wildcats were involved with a very intense, physical, and fast-paced match against the Cru, who took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute after a Jeremy Bowler free kick slipped through the hands of freshman keeper Randy Richard.

UMHB would add another goal 15 minutes into the second half on a Scott Poole goal, which was assisted by Derek Geels.

LC showed no signs of giving in against the heavily favored Crusaders, however, as Raffi Ferreira drove home a goal in the 73rd minute of the contest to bring the Wildcats within one, 2-1.

LC would get a few other quality scoring opportunities by James Cox and Tulio Glasner, but both were stopped by UMHB keeper Blake Lander.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats are still in the thick of the ASC playoff hunt, sitting in seventh place with a 4-4-2 conference record.

With Hardin-Simmons playing Texas-Tyler to a draw on Friday, the Wildcats fell behind HSU, who is now 5-4-1, in the standings for the final ASC playoff spot.

LC still has two conference games left on the slate, beginning with UT-Dallas on Thursday at 7 p.m. and followed by the Ozarks at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Those games will be played in Richardson, Tx. And Clarksville, Ar, respectively.
