Men's Soccer splits weekend road swing, sets school wins record

10/15/2012 11:35:00 AM

With Friday's 1-0 match victory over LeTourneau, the Louisiana College men's soccer team set a new program high water mark for wins with their sixth victory of the season.

The game appeared as though it may be pushed into overtime, but Caio Sousa's goal in the 85th minute of regulation off an assist from Fellipe Albuquerque put the match away and gave the Wildcats the victory.

LC pushed the pace the entire match, rattling off 16 shots total, nine shots on goal. Freshman goal keeper Randy Richard had another great outing, as he came up with six saves in the shutout, his 3rd of the season.

Despite a 4-0 loss to traditional ASC power UT-Tyler on Saturday, the Wildcats still sit above .500 on the year at 6-4-2 with a 3-3-2 record in ASC play. That puts them in sole possession of 6th place in the ASC standings, still holding firm to an opportunity to make the postseason for the first time in program history, as the top six teams in the standings at the end of the year make the conference tournament.

This is the latest into a season that the Wildcats have ever been in contention for an ASC tournament appearance as well as being above the .500 mark.

Albuquerque, in his freshman campaign, also has an opportunity to chase history as he has driven home 10 goals so far this season, only four short of the school record set by Oscar Girou in 2007. He is also 2nd in the ASC this season in goals scored behind UT-Dallas' Michael Darrow.

The Wildcats have an opportunity to improve their chances at making the postseason this Thursday as Concordia who, at 3-8-1 sits in the bottom half of the conference standings, come to Pineville for a matchup that begins at 7 p.m. at Wildcat Field.

With the school wins record already in hand, a playoff appearance would certainly be the icing on the cake for Prince Borde's Wildcats, who also have an opportunity to set the single season team goals record of 29 as well. They sit just six goals shy of that mark, which was set in 2007.
