PINEVILLE, La. – With the American Southwest East Division portion of their schedule just starting to get under way, the Louisiana College men's timing couldn't have been better as they ended a seven-game skid with a 77-69 win over ASC East opponent Ozarks Thursday night.
Louisiana College (5-8, 5-6 ASC) rode the backs of three players in the win. For two players, it was par for the course. For the third, it was a breakout game.
While point guard
Jelani Mitchell (St. Martinville, La./St. Martinville HS) and post
Korey Salmon (Deville, La./Buckeye HS), both seniors, scored 18 points apiece, an occurrence that has become commonplace the last three seasons, it was sophomore wing
Doc Welch (Alexandria, La./Alexandria Senior HS) who scored the game's most critical buckets and led the team in scoring.
Welch, who came off the bench, scored a team-high 20 points and hit four second-half three-pointers as well as the game-sealing free throws with less than 30 second to play. He was also good for six rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
Salmon grabbed eight rebounds and added two assists, two blocks and two steals while Mitchell dished out six assists and pulled four rebounds.
Ozarks (4-12, 2-11 ASC) was led by the 25-point, 11-rebound double-double of Ronnie Dodd. Joshua Clark added 14 points off the bench for the Eagles.
LC, which despite its recent woes remains in third place in the ASC East (which would qualify the Wildcats for the conference tournament), returns to action Saturday at 3 p.m. with a home contest against nationally-ranked Texas Dallas, a team that sits at 13-4 overall, 9-4 in conference and in first place in the East.
