PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana College women's soccer team ran into a tough opponent in its season opener Thursday night, falling to Millsaps 8-1.

Despite the loss, the improvements the Lady Cats (0-1) made from a year ago were noticeable from the start.

With LC trailing 2-0 in the 22nd minute, freshman Sarah Smith took an Anna Champagne corner kick out of the air for the first goal of the season. In 2010, the Lady Cats did not convert on a set piece.

Unfortunately for Louisiana College, Millsaps (1-0) found a bit more success on the offensive end and converted eight goals on 22 shots, headed by a pair of goals by Margaret Eggers.

The number of shots allowed by the LC defense was substantially lower than the near 30 average of a year ago.

Managed six shots in the game, another sign of improvement from 2010, two of which were on goal.

Next up for the Lady Cats is a Saturday afternoon home showdown with Spring Hill. That game will take place at 1 p.m.
