MARSHALL, Texas – The Louisiana College softball team fell a little short in its bid to participate in the 2011 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament here Friday, dropping both games of a season-ending doubleheader against East Texas Baptist, 5-2 and 2-1.
By virtue of these losses, the Lady Cats (28-10, 15-9 ASC East) locked themselves into fourth place in the division, one spot short of qualifying for the conference tournament, which takes the top three teams from the ASC's East and West Divisions.
ETBU (32-6, 17-5 ASC East) secured the divisional title with Mississippi College (29-9, 16-6 ASC East) and Texas-Tyler (29-9, 15-7 ASC East) set to battle for second place Saturday.
Were Mississippi College to sweep the Saturday doubleheader from Texas-Tyler, the Patriots and Lady Cats would hold identical records in the division but UTT would still earn the tournament berth thanks to holding the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Louisiana College's exclusion from the conference tournament does not preclude the team from participating in the NCAA National Tournament in the coming weeks.
Based on recent history, and LC's current No. 2 ranking in the Atlantic Region, LC's chances for a regional invitation are fair.
Last season, the NCAA awarded tournament berths to the top four teams from the ASC East.
On Friday, though, the news wasn't as pleasant as the Lady Cats fell behind 4-0 and never recovered in Game 1 and lost on a walk-off walk in Game 2.
Rene' Schwartzenburg (16-4) took the loss in the first contest while
Kelly Williams (8-6) suffered the same fate in the second.
Shelby Parker (12-1) and Erin Garcia (14-5) were the respective winning pitchers for ETBU.
Offensively, LC was led by
Brittany Menard, who went a combined 4-for-8 with a run scored, and
Kaylee Guidry, who went a combined 3-for-6.
The Tigers were led at the plate by Beck Young, who went a combined 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI.
