LONGVIEW, Texas - A day after splitting with Texas Dallas in their American Southwest Conference East Division opener, the No. 2 Louisiana College softball team swept through ASC East foe LeTourneau 7-0 and 6-2 to improve to 11-1 overall and 3-1 in divisional play.
Sophomore leadoff and center fielder
Brittany Menard (Baton Rouge, La./Parkview Baptist) went 4-for-8 on the day with three RBI and a run scored and senior catcher
Amber Thomas (Rosepine, La./Rosepine HS) went 2-for-6 with two runs scored, five RBI and a grand slam to lead the LC offense.
Senior All-American pitcher
Rene' Schwartzenburg (Marksville, La./Marksville HS) was the star of the circle, pitching a 12-strikeout three-hit shutout in the first contest.
Schwartzenburg faced just 27 batters in the first contest and walked just one.
In the first contest, one in which Menard went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Thomas 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored - LC also got solid performances at the plate from
Leslie Eastham (Baton Rouge, La./Woodlawn HS) and
Kelsey Brown (Rayne, La./Notre Dame-Crowley/Hinds CC).
Eastham went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Brown went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and another batted in.
In Game 2, the Lady Cats rallied from a 2-1 deficit with a late surge, scoring four runs in the sixth on a grand slam by Thomas to notch the victory.
Senior
Kelly Williams got the win in the nightcap after pitching a complete game and striking out two.
In that contest, Menard went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI and Thomas 1-for-3.
Daniele Wilson (Destrehan, La./Archbishop Chapelle/Copiah-Lincoln CC) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
LeTourneau's Kelsie Stephenson took the loss in both contests.
LC, which opened the season with a 12 consecutive road games, will open its home schedule on Saturday night when the Mississippi College Choctaws pay a visit for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
