PINEVILLE, La. – The Wildcats hung in the game until the bitter end, but the end was still a bit of a disappointment for the Louisiana College men's soccer team, which dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision to Howard Payne in American Southwest Conference action Saturday.
Howard Payne struck early, with Eric Young scoring a goal in the second minute.
The LC defense kicked into high gear from there and held HPU scoreless until the 61st minute, when Young once again found the back of the net.
The Wildcats were undeterred, though, and cut the lead in half in the 64th minute when
Jakob Goodwin scored on a
Vinny Torres assist.
HPU got an insurance goal in the 80th minute, though, with a goal from Jesus Vasquez and held on for the win.
The Wildcats did a good job of getting shots off, putting 11 of their 18 shots on goal, but struggled to finish thanks in large part to a 10-save performance by Howard Payne goalie Kyle Huesing.
HPU put eight of its 13 shots on goal.
Louisiana College senior keeper
Eric Post finished with five saves on the day.
The match wrapped a two-game home stand for LC, which will next take to the road for a pair of conference contests, a Friday meeting with Schreiner and Saturday match against Texas Lutheran.
