PINEVILLE, La. – The No. 21 Louisiana College Wildcats made short work of struggling Sul Ross State Saturday. The Wildcats outscored the Lobos 42-7 in the first half en route to a 56-21 win in the homecoming for LC.
The win secured for the Wildcats (6-1, 4-1 American Southwest Conference) their fourth straight winning season under sixth-year coach
Dennis Dunn and marked the best start in the history of Louisiana College football.
Senior receiver
Darnell Williams (Gulfport, Fla./Winter Park HS) came up 34 yards short of the school single-game receiving yards record, making seven grabs for 200 yards including an 87-yard touchdown grab to a cap a 28-point second quarter for the Wildcats.
Sophomore tailback
Ryan Montague (New Orleans, La./St. Augustine) was also solid, rushing for 74 yards on eight carries, most of which came on a 53-yard touchdown sprint in the second quarter. The Wildcats also got rushing touchdowns from
CerDerrick Tyson (Shreveport, La./Evangel),
Daron Bartholomew (Edgard, La./Arkansas-Monticello) and
Nate Janzen (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro HS).
The LC offense was good for 549 yards of total offense while Sul Ross (1-6, 0-5 ASC) amassed 369.
Wildcat quarterback
Jamie Bunting (Alexandria, La./Alexandria Senior HS) completed 16-of-28 passes for 274 yards and a touchdown. Backup quarterback
Tim Curry (Benton, La./Elysian Fields/UTEP) went 5-for-9 for 62 yards and two touchdowns, one apiece to
Dayne Reeves (Longville, La./South Beauregard) and
Maurice Cooper (Bogalusa, La./Bogalusa HS/Northwestern State) on passes of eight and 38 yards.
The LC defense allowed just two touchdowns, both in the second half, while forcing five turnovers.
Junior cornerback
Reggie Calhoun (New Orleans, La./Slidell HS) forced a fumble, recovered it and ran 68 yards for one of LC's touchdowns while
Eugene Jackson (Shreveport, La./Evangel),
Brodrick Frederick (Baton Rouge, La./Capitol HS),
Shaquille Lewis (Convent, La./Dutchtown HS) and
Brandon Love (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro HS) had one interception apiece.
Sul Ross' top offensive performers were wide receiver Lee Carothers, who caught seven passes for 139 yards, and tailback Dominique Carson, who rushed 18 times for 99 yards and one touchdown.
