KERRVILLE, Texas - For the first time in two calendar years, and two seasons, the Louisiana College women's soccer team can be called winners. The Lady Cats, who had been winless since 2009, gave coach
Bruce Deaton, the man who came to Pineville in 2010 with the aim of changing the oft-poor fortunes of the LC women, his first collegiate win to the tune of a 1-0 victory over Schreiner.
“It was a huge win,” Deaton said. “We've been close and played well in several matches but weren't able to break through. Something always seemed to happen. Today, everything came together. I'm so happy for the girls. They have deserved a win, played well enough for a win, so many times. This should convince them that they are a good team and on the right track.”
The Lady Cats had not won a match since 0ct. 10, 2009, the day on which they defeated McMurry 1-0.
Anna Champagne (Houma, La./Vandebilt Catholic) connected on a long, set-piece goal in the match's 20th minute and the Lady Cats (1-13, 1-8 American Southwest Conference) played stellar defense for the remaining 70 minutes to stymie Schreiner (2-11, 1-7 ASC) and log the win.
“Anna hit a gorgeous shot on a direct kick,” Deaton said. “She absolutely drilled it into the top of the net. As soon as she touched it I said, 'That's going in.' We've had close calls before, but this one worked perfectly
Junior keeper
Emily Breaux (Lafayette, La./Lafayette HS), an all-conference performer who was in goal the last time the Lady Cats were victorious and one of just five members of the 2009 squad still on the team, posted her third career clean sheet and registered the win in goal.
“We played focused and were finally able to put everything together,” Deaton said. “We did everything correct, collectively. In the second half we really did play some amazing defense.
Next up for the Lady Cats is a 1 p.m. match with Texas Lutheran Saturday in Seguin, Texas.
