PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana College men improved their American Southwest Conference record to 5-4 and improved to 6-7 overall with a 78-76 upset win over division-leading East Texas Baptist in their ASC East opener.
The Wildcats, who have now won back-to-back games, led 36-29 at the break and survived a late charge by the Tigers (9-4, 6-3 ASC) thanks to a last-second foul drawn by junior wing
Jarrod Jackson.
After ETBU's Jacob Turnipseed and Jaron Joseph hit three, three-pointers in the last minute to tie the game a 78 apiece with just 10 seconds to play, Jackson got down the floor and into the lane, drew the foul, sunk a pair of free throws and handed the win over to the Wildcats.
Jackson, who accounted for 16 points in the win, was just one of several heroes of the game for Louisiana College.
Perhaps the biggest star was
Chukwuma Ekeh, the lone senior on the team, who put up a game-high 22 points, including going 9-for-10 from the free throw line, in addition to pulling down six rebounds, dishing out an assist and blocking a shot.
LC shot 84.4 percent from the free-throw line as a team on the night with Jackson going 7-for-8 and JeLani Mitchell 6-for-6.
Mitchell added 10 points in the win with
Danny Sumner, himself 2-for-4 from the free-throw line, adding 17 points after hitting five three-pointers.
ETBU's top scorer was Turnipseed. The Central Louisiana native and Anacoco High School graduate, accounted for 17 points and seven assists.
The Tigers also got solid showings from Josh Chambers (16 points) and Joseph (12).
LC returns to action at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20, with another ASC East contest, this time against the University of the Ozarks.
