Wildcats lose home opener in heartbreaking fashion

Box Score
PINEVILLE , La. – For the second time in as many games, the Louisiana College Wildcats fell one touchdown short of a win against an undefeated opponent.

One week after dropping a 41-34 decision to Belhaven, the Wildcats (0-2) fell in their home opener by a count of 62-56 to Huntingdon in overtime.

In a game in which the two teams combined for 1,159 yards of total offense, the Wildcats were turned away without a score on their first overtime series.

Huntingdon wasted no time in capitalizing on that misstep, marching the requisite 25 yards in three plays and finishing the game on an 18-yard run by Courtney Moss.

It was the fourth rushing touchdown of the day for Moss, who finished with 78 yards on 12 carries, and the sixth rushing touchdown of the game for Huntingdon, which also benefitted from two rushing touchdowns from Caleb McCants.

The Wildcats, on the other hand, made their money through the air, riding the mind-boggling performance of senior quarterback Ben McLaughlin (Dierks, Ark./Dierks HS), who went 27-for-50 passing with no interceptions and racked up 489 yards and four scores.

McLauhglin's primary targets on the night were senior Jordan Rideaux (Carencro, La./Carencro HS) and junior D'Mario Parker (Shreveport, La./Northwestern State).

Rideaux tied the school record for career receptions thanks to his six catches, which resulted in 137 yards and one score.

Those six catches gave him 174 for his career, the same number of passes Dexter Falgoust hauled in for LC from 2003-2006.

Parker, a junior and new addition to the team, caught four passes for 114 yards and a touchdown.
Senior Matt Albrecht (Slidell, La./Pope John Paul II HS) and junior Justin Usey (Belle Chasse, La./Belle Chasse HS) accounted for the Wildcats' other two receiving touchdowns.

Of course, in a game so wrought with scoring, touchdowns came in a variety of ways.

Rideaux scored the game's first touchdown on a 23-yard reception but Huntingdon built a 21-7 lead by the end of the first quarter after two touchdown runs by Moss and a 30-yard touchdown pass from Nick Plagenhoef to Cody Pearcy.

CerDerrick Tyson (Shreveport, La./Evangel/Louisiana Tech) had a two-yard run to cut the lead to 21-14 and LC tied the game at 21 apiece when Darnell Williams (Gulfport, Miss./Winter Park HS/Trinity Valley CC).

After a touchdown run by Moss, Parker scored on a 21-yard pass reception to send LC to the locker room down 28-27 at the half.

In the second half, Pearcy hauled in a 51-yard touchdown pass to up Huntingdon's lead to 35-27 but Usey pulled down a 14-yard touchdown pass from McLaughlin to bring LC to within 35-33 of the lead.

The teams then traded rushing touchdowns with McCants and LC's Chad Hindman (Slidell, La./Pope John Paul II HS) each finding the end zone leading to a 49-41 advantage for Huntingdon.

LC tied the score in the fourth quarter on a 32-yard touchdown pass from McLaughlin to Albrecht and a successful two-point conversion attempt in which Tyson completed a halfback pass to McLaughlin.

After all of that offense it was appropriate, if not ironic, that LC would claim the lead on a defensive play when sophomore linebacker Nate Janzen (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro HS) scooped up a fumble and raced 51 yards to pay dirt and a 56-49 lead for the Wildcats.

Unfortunately, that was where the good news stopped for Louisiana College as Plagenhoef found Willie McDowell on a 29-yard touchdown completion to tie the game near the end of regulation and Huntigdon took the game in the first overtime.

The Wildcats, whose by falls in week three, will not return to action until September 25 when they visit rival Mississippi College.
