MARSHALL, Texas - The No. 1-ranked Louisiana College softball team split with No. 2 East Texas Baptist in a road doubleheader Sunday afternoon in the final day of the regular season for both teams. The Lady Wildcats took game one 1-0 but fell 8-0 in the second game.
The split means that LC, which finished the regular season 35-5 and 19-5 in the American Southwest Confence, will enter next week's ASC Tournament as the No. 2 seed out of the ASC East Division.
The Lady Wildcats could have earned the ASC East crown with a sweep of ETBU but instead fell to second behind Texas-Tyler, which finished with a 20-4 confernece record after a two-game sweep of Mississippi College Sunday afternoon.
Information on who the Lady Wildcats will face in the ASC Tournament opener will be released Sunday evening.
In game one, Junior pitcher Rene' Schwartzenburg (Marksville, La./Marksville High) improved to 21-2 on the year after pitching a complete-game shutout and allowing just three hits while walking none and striking out five.
LC scored the game's only run in the top of the sixth inning after freshman Meggie Burkett (West Monroe, La./West Ouachita High), pinch-hitting for junior catcher Amber Thomas (Rosepine, La./Rosepine High), led off the inning with an infield single.
Senior Allison Frye (Pineville, La./Pineville High) followed with an infield hit of here own and freshman Brittany Menard (Baroun Rouge, La./Parkview Baptist) sacrifice-bunted Burkett to third before senior Mary Alice Roy (Baton Rouge, La./Central Private) sent Burkett home with a ground out to second.
Game two did not go as well for LC, which fell 8-0 in six innings. Junior Carlie Wheeler (Baton Rouge, La./Parkview Baptist) took the loss and fell to 6-1 on the year.
