Box Score
PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana College men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker 65-63 on Saturday afternoon on a last second shot by the University of the Ozarks' Blake Mitchem.
Mitchem hit a deep jumper at the top of the key with 0.3 seconds left to lift the Eagles to victory and cap off an excellent personal performance. The Ozarks sophomore needed less than fifteen minutes to earn a double-double, with 16 points and 12 rebounds in the first half. Mitchem would go on to carry the Ozarks team with 27 points and 14 boards.
Korey Salmon scored 14 to lead the Wildcats, and helped the hosts erase a double-digit deficit. LC trailed by as many as 14 in the second half, but slowly nipped away at the margin as the clock ran down. Salmon also grabbed seven rebounds and three steals.
The Wildcats took several slim leads in the final minutes, but found themselves down by four points with 90 seconds left to play.
Although they fought to tie the game, a dagger three-pointer by the Eagles' Jerard McGinty put them back in a hole. Mcginty was four for nine from behind the arc, and pitched in 16 points in the victory for Ozarks.
The Wildcats didn't give up the fight and evened the score at 63, as guard Jelani Mitchell answered from long range with under 30 seconds remaining. Mitchell was in double digits for LC with 10 points, including 3-5 shooting from behind the arc.
Chukwuma Ekeh added 10 points as well and led the Wildcats on the boards with 8.
Unfortunately for LC, Mitchem was there at the death as he had been all afternoon, sinking the winning shot and their comeback hopes. A last-ditch tip attempt for the Wildcats was on target, but bounced just off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
University of Ozarks runs their record to 8-12, while Louisiana College drops to 8-11. Each team now has a 6-9 mark in American Southwest Conference play.
The Wildcats will be home next Thursday night when they host East Texas Baptist University.
