LAKE CHARLES, La. – Louisiana College was unable to follow its season-opening upset win over the University of New Orleans, with a successful showing at NCAA Division I McNeese State.
The Cowboys size proved too much for the Wildcats (1-1), McNeese scored pulled down 17 offensive boards to LC's 21 total rebounds, almost all of which lead to points, en route to a 92-53 win.
On the game McNeese pulled down 47 rebounds, 26 better than the Wildcats.
The Wildcats actually led 2-0 prior to start the game after the Cowboys received a technical for dunking during pregame. From there, however, it was all McNeese.
The Cowboys (2-1) outscored the Wildcats 43-23 in regulation time and held a 43-25 lead at the half.
Jarrod Jackson, who scored 34 in LC's win over the University of New Orleans Thursday night, led the charge for LC in the first half scoring 11 points. The junior from Albany finished the game with 11 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal.
McNeese got double-digit socring efforts from two players in the first half with Stephan Martin scoring 13 off the bench and PJ Alawoya putting up 11.
By game's end, Martin had 21, Alawoya 17 points and eight rebounds, and the pair were joined in double-figure scoring by Jeremie Mitchell (16) Diego Kapelan (11).
LC's next-highest scorers were
Chukwuma Ekeh (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard) and
Phillip George (Baton Rouge, La./Family Christian), with eight points apiece.
Danny Sumner added seven points and four rebounds off the bench while freshman
Doc Welch (Alexandria, La./Alexandria Senior High) scored six points off the bench in the last minute-and-a-half of regulation, his first minute and points as a collegiate athlete.
George also had three steals in the game.
Next up for the Wildcats will be a visit to the University of New Orleans the day before Thanksgiving, for a 4 p.m. rematch with the Privateers.
