MARSHALL, Texas – Louisiana College coach
Dennis Dunn said we wanted his team, one which had yet to play in a game decided by less than one possession in 2010, to establish itself early against American Southwest Conference foe East Texas Baptist.
The Wildcats responded with a dominating performance in all phases of the game and logged a much-needed 49-21 vistory to improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action and bounce back from last week's heartbreaking, 42-38 loss to No. 4 Mary Hardin-Baylor.
“We wanted to come in and dominate tonight,” Dunn said. “That's what we did. I thought we were dominant in all phases of the game. We are good team. We just have to keep getting better.”
It will be hard to improve on what the Wildcats did to ETBU (2-4, 1-3 ASC) on Saturday night in what was the Homecoming for the Tigers.
The LC offense ran and passed at will and posted 585 yards of total offense, 406 passing yards and 179 rushing yards.
Junior tailback providing the first 100-yardrushing performance of the year for the Wildcats racking up 112 yards on 17 carries and setting up a pair of goal-line touchdowns by quarterback Ben McLaughlin.
In the passing game, McLaughlin completed 30-of-46 passes for 391 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions.
His primary targets on the night were senior All-America receiver Jordan Rideaux and junior
Darnell Williams, each of whom caught a pair of touchdown passes.
Rideaux caught 11 passes for 114 yards while Williams got 124 yards out of his five receptions.
“Last week, we didn't do a good job of finishing strong,” Williams said. “This week, we came out and played our game for four quarters. We didn't let ETBU force us to play their game, we forced them to play LC football and we were successful.”
Perhaps the biggest heroes of the night were the Wildcat defenders, a group that had not held a team under 40 points prior to Saturday night.
Against ETBU, there was no such problem.
The Wildcats forced four turnovers, three interceptions and one fumble, and kept the Tigers at bay most of the night.
Sophomore safety
Reggie Calhoun was good for a pair of interceptions with Brodrick Fredrick (Baton Rouge, La./Capitol HS) providing the third.
“That was an important win for us,” senior defensive tackle Charles Cloman said. “After the way we lost last week, we wanted to show everybody that we are a team that will keep fighting, no matter what. We still have a shot at the playoff and we're going to do everything we can get in.”
“You know, I said last week that there's no reason that we should be where we are as far as our record,” Williams added. “We could have easily been undefeated coming into this game. We knew we were a good team and capable of getting into the playoffs. Tonight we showed it.”
Next up for LC is a Homecoming showdown with Howard Payne at 4 p.m. next Saturday in Wildcat Stadium.
