KERRVILLE, Texas – The Louisiana College men's basketball team continued its strong early-season push through the American Southwest Conference and the women bounced back from their first loss of the season here Monday night against Schreiner.
The Lady Cats toughed out a 48-42 win while the men cruised to a 72-58 win, their best showing of the season, against the Mountaineers.
The LC women trailed 23-18 after the first half but rebounded to outscored Schreiner 30-19 in the second to improve to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in ASC play.
Freshman post player Voneshia Williams paced the Lady Cats' effort with 13 points, eight rebounds, two steals and one block.
Junior guard Christy Pantallion added 12 points, four rebounds and a steal while reigning ASC East player of the year Christy Pantallion put up eight points, pulled down seven rebounds and produced four steals.
Schreiner was led by Mercedes Corona and Hannah Burleson, who scored 15 and 14 points respectively.
The men's game was never really in doubt as the Wildcats outscored Schreiner's men 42-22 in the first half to set up an easy run to the win, a 4-2 overall record and a 3-1 mark in ASC play.
Four LC men reached double figures in the game, but the Wildcats top performers were guards Jelani Mitchell and Phillip George.
Mitchell, a sophomore, had 15 points, six assists and six rebounds while George, a freshman had the best outing of his young career with 15 points, five rebounds, one assist, one block and two steals.
Also helping the LC cause were Jarrod Jackson, Korey Salmon and Chuckwuma Ekeh.
Jackson was good for 11 points, two assists, two steals and five boards while Ekeh scored 10 points, pulled down four rebounds and dished out two assists.
Salmon accounted for nine points, seven rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal.
Schreiner's top scorer was Mark Hopkins with 15.
The LC men will next travel to Lamar in Beaumont, Texas, on Wednesday night for a game against their third NCAA Division I foe of the season (they played Louisiana-Lafayette in an exhibition game and McNeese in a regular season game). The contest will tip at 7 p.m.
The LC women will be off until Saturday at 5 p.m. when they travel to Jackson, Miss., for a non-conference game against Millsaps.
Both the men and women will return home on Dec. 17 with home ASC games against Sul Ross.
