HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Louisiana Christian University men's soccer team saw three early mistakes turn into quick goals by #20 William Carey, a deficit which was too much to overcome in a 4-0 loss to the Crusaders Saturday night at Danny Owens Field.
Louisiana Christian (0-1) found itself behind quickly as the press defense by #20 William Carey (2-0) forced the ball loose inside the Wildcats' defensive box, which the Crusaders jumped on and put in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead in just the fourth minute of the contest.
The Crusaders added a pair of quick hitter goals on the counterattack in the 22
nd and 24
th minutes to blow the match open with a 3-0 score.
LCU finally settled in and started getting some offensive movement together, resulting in the team's first shot of the season which was taken by
Juan Sierra and forced action by the WCU goalkeeper.
The offense started to get more in rhythm in the second half, leading to even more attempts at the Carey goal, but none would find the back of the net. Instead, WCU added one more in the 83
rd minute off a corner kick as a Crusader player was able to get his head to the cross and redirect it into the net.
Sierra took three shots in the match for the Wildcats, putting all of them on target.
Gustavo Varnier's lone shot attempt was also on frame and forced a save from the WCU goalkeeper.
As a team, LCU put up five shots in the match, four of which were on frame.
Ricardo Gross (0-1) was under attack all evening from the Crusader offense. He saw 15 total shots taken toward his net, eight of which were on frame. He was credited with four saves on the evening.
The Wildcats now head to Mobile for a pair of matches. LCU's first match will be against the hosting Rams (0-1) with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. at The Jungle on the University of Mobile campus.
