PINEVILLE, La. – The #20 Louisiana Christian University baseball team struggled through the rain, dropping a 15-4 decision in seven innings to the John Melvin Millers Wednesday night at Billy Allgood Field.
After John Melvin (28-12) put up one in the third and then seven in the fourth, Louisiana Christian (34-11) got all of its runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of the same heavy rainfall which had allowed the Millers to score their runs in the top half of the inning.
Braden McLin started the fourth by getting hit by a pitch. Now with one out,
Chris Kelley banged the wall in right-center for a double.
Darron Degeyter was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and then
Luke Morgan watched ball four fly by to force home McLin.
Gavin Vordick kept the rally going as he also slammed a baseball off the wall, this one to center field, scoring Kelley's pinch runner,
Zephaniah Singleton, and Degeyter.
Brady Huffman then sent a fly ball to right-center which was tracked down, but it still did the job as Morgan tagged up from third to score, cutting the deficit down to 8-4.
But the Wildcat offense stalled from their while a tough night from the mound and defense allowed the Millers to open the score with another run in the fifth and a six-spot in the seventh to put the run-rule into play.
McLin was 1-for-2, was hit by a pitch, and scored a run.
Kelley was 1-for-3 with a double while his courtesy runner, Singleton, scored once.
Vordick was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI to lead the offense.
Morgan got a RBI and scored a run without getting a hit in two official at bats, having drawn a walk.
Huffman also collected a RBI without a hit, officially 0-for-1 at the plate.
Aedan Thobodeaux (0-1) got the decision as he threw an inning of work, allowing one hit and one run with one walk and one strikeout.
McLin got the start on the mound as he threw two innings, allowing three hits and no runs with one strikeout and no walks.
Thomas Collins was the only other pitcher to throw more than an inning, going 1.1 without giving up a hit or a run while striking out two and walking one.
Seth Whitney threw an inning and didn't give up a hit but gave up three runs, all earned, with three walks and no strikeouts.
