HAWKINS, Texas – The Louisiana Christian University softball team scored five runs in the second inning and rode a complete game, three-hit shutout from
Olivia Falcon to open its series against Jarvis Christian with a 9-0 run-rule win over the Bulldogs in five innings Tuesday afternoon at Lady Bulldog Field.
Louisiana Christian (14-18, 6-10 RRAC) made its move in the second inning, one that Jarvis Christian (1-17, 1-14 RRAC) would not be able to counter.
Lexi Broussard started the inning by drawing a walk and
Cecilia Bookman followed her with a base hit. After both stole a base to give LCU second and third with no outs,
Christina Curtis hit a ground ball to second which allowed Broussard to come home for a 1-0 lead.
Emily Marks drew her own walk and stole second to set up
Madelyn Bourgoyne, who also drove a base hit through the infield to score Bookman.
Mariel Medrano followed by also driving a base hit past the Bulldog infield, scoring both Bourgoyne and Marks. Medrano's speed then became a factor as she stole third and the throw to try and get her went wild, allowing her to come home for a 5-0 Wildcat lead when the inning ended.
LCU added two more in the third inning as Broussard beat out a bunt base hit with one out and Bookman followed her with a walk. Both moved up by stealing a base and Curtis did a job again, hitting a ground ball behind the runners to move them up with Broussard scoring. Marks followed her with a hit up the middle to score Bookman, making it 7-0 LCU after three.
The fourth inning provided the game's final two runs. Medrano led it off with a double to left. She stole third and the throw down couldn't be corralled, allowing her to come home.
Kate Daigle, who was at the plate when Medrano came home, drove a base hit to right to keep it going. She moved to second as
Clare Gauthreaux rolled a grounder to the second baseman and came home on Broussard's hit back up the middle which rolled all the way to the fence for the game's final run.
Medrano, Brousard, and Bourgoyne each had a pair of hits. Medrano went 2-for-4 with a double, stole two bases, knocked in two runs, and scored twice.
Broussard got hits in both of her official at-bats with a double, a walk, stole three bases, knocked in a run, and scored twice.
Bourgoyne went 2-for-3 with a double, a RBI, and a run scored.
Bookman got a hit in her lone official at-bat and drew a walk, stole two bases, and scored twice.
Curtis didn't get a hit in three at-bats but drove in a pair of runs.
Falcon (7-6) was in the circle for all five innings for the Wildcats as she threw a complete game shutout to get the win, allowing just three hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
The Wildcats and Bulldogs wrap up their series on Wednesday with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one of Wednesday's twin bill is set for 12 p.m. at Lady Bulldog Field.
