PINEVILLE, La. – The #15 Louisiana Christian University baseball team locked down the Texas College offense, holding the Steers to just four hits over two games as the Wildcats picked up a pair of wins, 3-0 and 8-0, Friday afternoon at Billy Allgood Field.
Game 1 - #15 Louisiana Christian 3, Texas College 0
#15 Louisiana Christian (28-6, 13-4 RRAC) missed a couple early opportunities to take the lead in game one against Texas College (2-17, 2-15 RRAC), but the Wildcats got all the run support needed in the fifth inning.
With one out in the fifth inning,
Gavin Vordick was given a pinch hit opportunity and was hit by a pitch. He stole second and came home on
Braden Trull's base hit through the right side of the infield.
Trull kept the run going as he stole second base, moved to third on
Drake Aldridge's fly ball to deep left, and scored on a wild pitch while
Matthew Cody was heading to first on a walk.
Cody also stole second with the throw down going to the outfield, allowing him to take third as well. He touched home on
Harrison Waxley's base hit down the left field line for the 3-0 score.
That was all the run support
Kade Linn (6-1) needed as he took a perfect game into the fifth inning and a no-hitter into the seventh, which was the game's final scheduled inning. He got his first complete game shutout of the season, allowing just the one hit and one walk with no runs and 10 strikeouts, his fourth game this year with double-digit Ks.
Trull, Waxley, and
Owen Simoneaux each had a hit to account for all three of LCU's hits in the contest.
Trull was 1-for-2, was hit by a pair of pitches, stole a base, knocked in a run, and scored once.
Waxley was 1-for-3 with a RBI.
The Wildcat offense was helped by five walks, six hit batters, and stole six bases during the contest.
Game 2 - #15 Louisiana Christian 8, Texas College 0
The Wildcats were quicker to the scoreboard in the nightcap, plating a pair in the first inning.
Caleb Brown led off the inning with a walk. He was sacrificed to second by
Luke Morgan and raced home from there on Trull's hit up the middle. Trull stole second and scored on Waxley's return to sender shot back up the middle for a 2-0 lead after one.
LCU's lead grew in the third inning as Trull led off with a hit to right-center, stole second, and scored as Vordick traded places with him with a double down the left field line, making it 3-0 Wildcats.
The lead grew further in the fifth. Cody reached base on a fielder's choice and stole second. He moved to third on Vordick's fly ball to right and scored on as
Brady Huffman dropped a base hit with two outs into left-center, giving LCU a 4-0 lead.
LCU added a pair in both the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Vordick led off with a walk, moved to second on Waxley's base hit, and came home as Simoneaux laid down a bunt which the Steer defense threw away. Waxley, who moved to third on the Simoneaux bunt and TC error, scored on a wild pitch for a 6-0 Wildcat advantage through seven.
Trull led off the eighth reaching on another Steer miscue as the first base couldn't handle the throw from shortstop. He went to second as Cody drew a walk and moved to third on a ground ball by Vordick. Waxley brought him home with a double down the left field line. Waxley went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Huffman's base hit through the right side of the infield for the game's final run.
Both Waxley and Trull went 3-for-4 with a walk in game two. Trull stole two bases, knocked in a run, and scored three times. Waxley had a double, knocked in a pair and scored twice.
Huffman was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
Vordick was 1-for-4 with a double, a RBI, and a run scored.
Brandon Carter (7-1) got the start and threw seven innings, allowing just two hits and no runs with one walk and nine strikeouts.
Jacob Bareswill threw an inning and allowed a hit and a walk with no runs or strikeouts.
Colton Williams also threw an inning, striking out all three batters he faced to end the contest.
The Wildcats look to complete the sweep of Texas College on Saturday as the two teams face off in the final game of the series with first pitch set for 12 p.m. at Billy Allgood Field.
