#14 Wildcats Ride Offense to Doubleheader Sweep of TAMUT

LCU Scores 24 Runs Over Two Games to Take Series Over Eagles

TEXARKANA, Texas – The #14 Louisiana Christian University baseball team scored 24 runs during its doubleheader against Texas A&M-Texarkana, winning both games of the twin bill, 9-5 and 15-11, to win the series over the Eagles Friday afternoon at George Dobson Field.

Game 1 - #14 Louisiana Christian 9, Texas A&M-Texarkana 5

#14 Louisiana Christian (26-5, 11-3 RRAC) used a two-out rally in the top of the first inning to get ahead of Texas A&M-Texarkana (12-20, 3-11 RRAC) to stay. With Brady Huffman on second base and two outs, Matthew Cody came through with a hit to the right-center gap to score Huffman, giving LCU the lead. Cody moved to second on a wild pitch and scored as Darron Degeyter dropped a base hit into center field, making it 2-0 Wildcats after the first inning.

Another big two-out rally in the third inning helped the Wildcats push the lead out even further. With two away, Braden Trull started the rally with a base hit to left. Cody then found space in center field and raced to second for a double, scoring Trull. Degeyter followed with the big hit as he took the first pitch he saw over the wall for a two-run home run, giving the Wildcats a 5-0 lead.

But the Eagles would not just go away as TAMUT rallied to make it a game again. A&M-Texarkana pushed one across in the bottom of the third, then had their big inning in the fourth, scoring three to pull the LCU lead down to just one at 5-4. The Eagles had the tying run at third base with one out in the inning, but relief pitcher Thomas Collins came on and induced a pair of pop flies to get out of the inning with the lead still intact.

LCU got one back in the top of the fifth as Harrison Waxley's base hit to left allowed Trull to come in from second, making it 6-4 Wildcats. TAMUT got it down to a one-run game again in the sixth inning as a RBI double scored one for a 6-5 LCU lead as the game entered the final the final inning of play.

The Wildcats put the game out of reach with three insurance runs in the seventh inning. With runners on the corners and one out, Waxley had the big hit, putting the ball over the left fielder's head for a double which scored both Trull and Degeyter. After moving to third on a passed ball, Waxley came home on Caleb Brown's ground ball to shortstop for the 9-5 score. The Eagles got a pair on in the bottom of the inning but pushed none across as the Wildcats held on for the win.

Cody, Degeyter, and Brown all went 3-for-4 at the plate. Degeyter's home run was his fourth of the season as he knocked in three runs and scored twice. Cody had a double, knocked in a pair and scored twice as well. Brown knocked in a run.

Waxley went 2-for-4 in the opener with a double, three RBI, and scored once.

Trull went 1-for-3 but drew a walk and was hit by a pitch. He scored all three times he reached base in game one.

Huffman was 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored.

Collins (3-0) threw 2.1 innings and allowed just two hits and one run, which was earned, with one walk and one strikeout to pick up the win.

Kade Linn got the start and threw 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and four runs, three earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.

Colton Williams threw the final 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and no runs with a walk and two strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.

Game 2 – #14 Louisiana Christian 15, Texas A&M-Texarkana 11

The nightcap saw Texas A&M-Texarkana jump out quickly as the Eagles scored three in the first inning and another in the second to take a 4-0 lead after two.

But an error and a two-out rally helped the Wildcat offense get into its rhythm in the third inning. With two outs, after the inning had already been extended due to a TAMUT error, and runners on first and second, Drake Aldridge was given a pinch hit opportunity and took advantage by smashing a home run for a three-run blast.

The rally wasn't over there. Following Aldridge's homer, Waxley drew a walk, Brown singled which moved Waxley to third, and then Braden McLin came through with a base hit to left to score Waxley and even things up at 4-4.

LCU jumped in front in the fifth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Brown dropped a base hit into left, scoring both Cody and Aldridge. Now with one out, Luke Morgan lifted a fly ball to center that was deep enough to let Waxley tag up and score. Logan  Lobell followed that with a ground ball to shortstop which the TAMUT defender could not make a play on, allowing Brown to come home for an 8-4 lead. The Eagles got one back in the bottom of the fifth and the Wildcats took an 8-5 into the sixth inning.

TAMUT made it a one-run game again in the bottom of the sixth as a two-RBI double pulled the Eagles back within a run at 8-7.

The Wildcats got some significant insurance in the top of the eighth inning as Aldridge came up with a runner on second and one out and found the left field wall for a double, scoring Trull.

Now with the bases loaded and two outs, Sterling Sims came up with the clutch hit, dropping a hit inside the right field foul line for a bases-clearing double as Aldridge, Brown, and McLin all came home for a 12-7 lead after eight.

LCU kept the runs going in the ninth, runs that would end up being needed. With runners on second and third with one out, a wild pitch allowed Huffman to race in from third to score. Aldridge then doubled down the left field line, scoring Blake Chauvin from third. McLin scored LCU's final run of the game with a base hit to the right-center gap, scoring Aldridge from second for a 15-7 Wildcat lead.

TAMUT tried to rally, scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth before the Wildcats were able to finally close the door and secure the win.

Aldridge led the Wildcat offense in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 and was a triple short of the cycle. He hit two doubles and his third home run of the season, drew a walk, knocked in five runs and scored four times.

McLin was also 3-for-4 with two doubles, drew two walks, knocked in two runs and scored once.

Cody went 2-for-3, drew a walk, and scored twice.

Brown was 2-for-4 and was hit by pitch twice, knocked in a run and scored twice.

Brandon Carter (6-1) got the win from the mound in game two. He threw five innings and allowed six hits and five runs, all earned, with three walks and four strikeouts.

Jacob Bareswill threw 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs, all earned, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Aedan Thibodeaux got the final two outs, allowing one hit and no runs. He got the other two batters he faced to hit fly balls for outs.

With the series win in hand, the #14 Wildcats look to finish the three-game Red River Athletic Conference series sweep against the Eagles on Saturday. First pitch of the series finale Saturday is set for 12 p.m. at George Dobson Field.
