PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University women's basketball team held Jarvis Christian to under 27 percent shooting and forced the Bulldogs into 25 turnovers to turn in a dominant, 70-38 win Thursday evening on Gene Rushing Court at H.O. West Fieldhouse.
Louisiana Christian (3-19, 2-14 RRAC) never trailed in the contest as
M'Kiyiah Olivier's basket just more than 1:15 into the contest gave the Wildcats the lead for good. But Jarvis Christian (3-19, 2-14 RRAC) didn't let LCU pull away immediately as it was just a one-point game, 7-6, with four minutes left in the opening period. However, that's where the Wildcats started to open the gap, scoring the quarter's final 12 points as
Alaiah Jarrell's three-pointer with just over a minute left made it 19-6 LCU heading to the second quarter.
Leading 22-10 midway through the second quarter, a
Kylei Leblanc lay-up started a 10-1 Wildcat run.
Carlea Owens ended that run with a free throw to give LCU a 32-11 lead with two minutes left until halftime. The Wildcats would take a 36-17 lead into the break.
Jarvis Christian trimmed the Wildcat lead down to 14 points, 38-24, out of the half. However, a Leblanc lay-up got the LCU rhythm going again and the Wildcats went on a 10-0 run to up the lead to 24 points as a lay-up by Olivier with four minutes to go in the third made it 48-24. A Leblanc three-pointer with a minute left gave LCU a 53-28 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
Those three points to close the third turned into a 10-0 run into the fourth with a free throw by
Maddison Carey giving the Wildcats a 60-28 lead with seven minutes left. That 32-point margin would be the game's largest and would be touched a couple more times, including after the final basket, a three-pointer by
Jakiya Thompson.
Leblanc led the way for the Wildcats, making eight of her 14 shots, including a three-pointer, and made all eight of her free throw attempts to finish the night with 25 points. She filled up the box with nine rebounds, four steals, and three blocks in the win.
Amiyah Simpkins, Olivier, and Carey finished with nine points with Olivier also dishing out five assists.
Owens scored seven points but grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds along with four assists.
LCU hit 35.5 percent of its shots in the contest and was 30 percent from three-point range in the win. The Wildcats also turned the 25 Bulldog turnovers into 24 points.
The Wildcats return home on Saturday as Texas College comes to Pineville. Tip-off of Saturday's contest against the Steers (8-14, 6-10 RRAC) is set for 1 p.m. on Gene Rushing Court at H.O. West Fieldhouse.
