Wildcats Drop Series to #22 TAMUT

LCU Drops All Three Games of RRAC Opening Series on Road to Top-25 Ranked Eagles

TEXARKANA, Texas – The Louisiana Christian University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Sunday at #22 Texas A&M-Texarkana, falling in game one 6-0 and 5-1 in game two to the Eagles at Bramlett Field.

Game 1 - #22 Texas A&M-Texarkana 6, Louisiana Christian 0

After a tough day at the plate in Saturday's series opener, Louisiana Christian (6-6, 0-3 RRAC) found a little more success on Sunday. Isabella Battaglia was able to get LCU's first hit off Texas A&M-Texarkana (8-3, 3-0 RRAC) pitching in the second inning.

Even with Battaglia removed from the base paths on a fielder's choice, LCU was able to get a little threat going in the inning, already trailing 2-0, as Kaitlyn Van Haverbeke, who reached on the fielder's choice, got into scoring position when Reagan Duplechain drew a base on balls. Both, however, would be left on base.

Now trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning, the Wildcats got another threat going as Mariel Medrano dropped a base hit into center field with one out, and then, with two outs, Christian Curtis found grass in left field for another hit, again putting runners on first and second. Again, though, the threat failed to turn into runs as the inning ended with them still on their bases.

Medrano, Curtis, Battaglia, and Kate Daigle all had hits while Van Haverbeke and Duplechain both drew walks. Daigle was also hit by a pitch in the contest.

Olivia Falcon threw all six innings in the circle for the Wildcats in the day's opener, allowing nine hits and six runs, five earned, with three walks and two strikeouts.

Game 2 - #22 Texas A&M-Texarkana 5, Louisiana Christian 1

The Wildcats once again found themselves down early as the Eagles plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

But LCU put together a bit of a response in the top of the third inning. With one out, Medrano beat out an infield single to the third baseman. She moved up to third as Maci Baldwin laid down a perfect bunt, giving the Wildcats runners on the corners with one away. Lexi Broussard then did the job, lifting a fly ball to left deep enough to let Medrano tag up and score to cut the deficit down to 2-1.

But that's where the rally ended. TAMUT added two in the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth for the game's final score.

Medrano found her bat in the final game of the series, getting hits in all three of her at bats, scoring LCU's lone run and stealing a base.

While Broussard didn't get a hit in two at bats, she did get the team's lone RBI in the contest.

Baldwin and Madelyn Bourgoyne each had a hit as well. Baldwin also drew a walk, as did Carley Koch.

Addison Bailey (1-2) threw 4.2 innings from the circle, allowing eight hits and four runs, all earned, walked two and struck out two.

Katelyn Carpenter and Carly Carpenter both threw 0.2 innings with Kately allowing two hits and a run, which was earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Carly got both batters she faced to hit ground balls that were handled easily for outs.

The Wildcats now head to Columbus, Ga. for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic next weekend. LCU's time in the NFCA Leadoff Classic starts on Friday, taking on both (RV) Coastal Georgia and (RV) Freed-Hardeman on day one. First pitch of Friday's game against the (RV) Mariners (8-0) is set for 11 a.m. EST/10 a.m. CST while the game against the (RV) Lions (2-0) will start at 1 p.m. EST/12 p.m. CST.
