PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University baseball team kicked off Red River Athletic Conference play with a pair of dominant wins over Jarvis Christian, knocking off the Bulldogs 19-1 and 9-0 Friday evening at Billy Allgood Field.
Game 1 – Louisiana Christian 19, Jarvis Christian 1
Two Jarvis Christian (0-8, 0-2 RRAC) errors in the bottom of the first inning of game one kept the Louisiana Christian (17-2, 2-0 RRAC) bats alive long enough for it to turn into a rout right out of the game.
With the bases loaded and two out,
Gavin Vordick's ground ball to third was booted, allowing both
Drake Aldridge and
Braden Trull to score.
Caleb Brown continued to make the error pay as he followed with a double to left which scored both
Matthew Cody and Vordick.
Harrison Waxley's single to right scored Brown and that was followed by
Jake Messina who traded places with Waxley as he doubled to center. Pinch runner
Cayden Cuti scored as
Braden McLin's ground ball to second was misplayed, giving LCU a 7-0 lead after one.
Things got even more crooked in the second as the Wildcats added nine more runs to the board in the inning, starting with Trull, Aldridge, and Cody all getting base hits to open the frame which also opened the scoring. Waxley and Trull both hit doubles which scored two runs each in the frame, but the big shot came from Aldridge who bashed a two-run homer to right-center for the inning's final two runs as LCU took a 16-0 lead into the third inning.
McLin added a run in the third as his two-out base hit through the left side of the infield allowed
Darron Degeyter to score, making it 17-0.
The Wildcats added their last two runs in the fifth inning as Cuti doubled to the left-center gap, scoring Degeyter and
Owen Simoneaux to give LCU a 19-0 lead after five.
Jarvis Christian avoided the game one shutout with a run in the sixth, but that would be all for the Bulldog offense for the day.
Trull led the offense getting hits in all four of his at-bats in the opener, two of which were doubles. He knocked in a pair of runs and scored three times.
Aldridge, Cody, Morgan, Waxley, and Degeyter all had two hits in game one. Aldridge's home run was his first of the season. Waxley knocked in three runs and scored twice.
Kade Linn (3-0) got the win on the mound for the Wildcats, throwing the first four inning and allowed just four hits with no runs while striking out seven with no walks.
Davis Duhon and Waxley both allowed just one hit and no runs in an inning of work each with Waxley striking out three.
Ben Bookman also worked an inning and gave up two hits and one run, which was earned, with one walk and two strikeouts.
Game 2 – Louisiana Christian 9, Jarvis Christian 0
Game two started just as fast for the Wildcats as
Braden McLin took the second pitch of the bottom of the first inning and deposited it over the left field wall for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.
But that wasn't all for the first inning, With two outs and Trull on second base, Cody's ground ball to short was thrown away, allowing Trull to come around and score for a 2-0 LCU lead after the first inning.
This time, the Wildcats wouldn't pull away so quickly. LCU added one in the fifth inning as, with the bases loaded and no outs,
Sterling Sims flied a ball out to center which allowed Waxley to come in from third for a 3-0 lead.
LCU started to pull away in the seventh. With one out and the bases loaded, Trull was able to beat out a double play turn by the Jarvis defense, scoring Cuti and keeping the Wildcats at bat. Two batters later, Cody beat out a ground ball to shortstop that was also thrown away, scoring both McLin and Trull for a 6-0 lead.
The Wildcats got further away in the eighth. Sims dropped a base hit into right which scored
James Bendeck, and then, two batters later,
Chris Kelley also found grass in right fight to score both McLin and Waxley for the 9-0 score.
McLin was 3-for-4 in the nightcap and was just a triple short of the cycle. His home run was his fifth of the season as he knocked in a run, scored three times himself, drew a walk, and stole a base.
Sims and Kelley both had two hits in game two with Sims knocking in one run and Kelley pushing across two.
Waxley and Trull both scored twice.
Brandon Carter (4-0) got the win in the nightcap, throwing the first six inning and allowing four hits and no runs while striking out 10 Bulldog batters and walking three.
Thomas Collins (2.0 IP) and
Colton Williams (1.0 IP) threw the final three innings, getting all nine combined hitters they faced out in order. Collins struck out three of the six batters he faced while Williams got two of his three batters out on strikes.
The Wildcats wrap up the opening weekend of RRAC play by looking to finish the sweep of the Bulldogs on Saturday as the two teams convene one more time. First pitch of Saturday's game against Jarvis Christian is set for 12 p.m. at Billy Allgood Field.
