PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University baseball team held its two opponents Saturday to a combined seven hits as the Wildcats won both games Saturday in the Texas Roadhouse Red River Classic, beating the Brescia Bearcats, 4-0, before knocking off the Midland Warriors for the second time on the weekend, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Billy Allgood Field.
Game 1 – Louisiana Christian 4, Brescia 0
Louisiana Christian (14-2) rode the arms of both
Bryce O'Quinn and
Thomas Collins to shut out Brescia (2-5), allowing the Bearcats to get just one hit throughout the seven inning contest.
The scoring started in the second inning as
Gavin Vordick got things started with a one-out single.
Caleb Brown followed with a base hit to left which included a throwing error that allowed both runners to move up 90 feet. After
Harrison Waxley walked to load the bases,
Sterling Sims banged a base hit through the left side of the infield, allowing Vordick to score.
Two batters later,
Braden McLin dropped a base hit into center field which brought Brown home for a 2-0 lead at inning's end.
LCU added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning. Sims started the inning by dropping a perfect bunt down the third base line which allowed him to reach without a throw. Two batters later, McLin walked and he was followed by pinch hitter
Chris Kelley, who dropped a base hit into left to load the bases.
Braden Trull then came through, driving a base hit back up the middle which allowed both McLin and Sims to score for the 4-0 score.
Sims was the only batter with multiple hits against Brescia, going 2-for-2 with a RBI, a run scored, and was hit by a pitch.
Trull was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
McLin was 1-for-2 with a walk, a RBI, and a run scored.
Collins (1-0) picked up the win as he threw the final four innings without allowing a hit or a run while striking out five and walking three.
O'Quinn got the start and threw three innings, giving up just one hit with no runs, one strikeout, and no walks.
Game 2 – Louisiana Christian 3, Midland 2
Midland (1-7) jumped on LCU quickly in the night cap as the Warriors got four hits and scored both of their runs in the top of the first inning.
Once that inning ended, starting pitcher
Owen Simoneaux found his groove, allowing just one more hit throughout the remainder of his time on the mound.
The Wildcat offense started its reply in the bottom of the first, thanks to a bit of help from the Midland defense. McLin started the inning with a first pitch base hit back up the middle. He was able to take second as the Warrior shortstop dropped the relay from the second baseman on a ground ball by Sims to second. Trull loaded the bases with a base hit to left-center. McLin came home on a ground ball to second by Drake Aldrige, getting one back to make it 2-1 Midland after one.
LCU tied it back up in the second inning. Kelley started the frame by watching ball four fly by for a base on balls. He was sacrificed over successfully by Brown and moved to third on a wild pitch.
Luke Morgan brought him home with a ground ball to shortstop where the only play was at first base, making it 2-2.
McLin started the third inning with a bang, literally, as he smashed a hit to dead center that banged off the wall and bounced away for a lead-off triple. Sims did the job from there, hitting another ground ball to shortstop where the only play was at first as McLin came home to give the Wildcats the lead for good.
McLin was 2-for-3 with the triple and scored twice in the contest.
Kelley was 2-for-2 at the plate, scored a run, and drew a walk.
Both Sims and Morgan had productive outs to score runs as neither recorded a hit in the contest but both had a RBI.
After the rough first inning, Simoneaux (2-0) settled in nicely. He went six innings and gave up five hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and a walk.
Brown came on in the seventh and allowed just one hit with no runs, two strikeouts, and no walks to pick up his second save of the season.
The Wildcats look to finish the Texas Roadhouse Red River Classic undefeated on Sunday as they host St. Francis in the final game of the Classic on Sunday. First pitch of Sunday's contest against the Cougars (1-6) is set for 1 p.m. at Billy Allgood Field.
