Wildcats Walk-Off Day One Sweep of Mobile

LCU Takes Pair from Rams to Open Four-Game Set

PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University baseball team controlled game one of the first of two days of doubleheaders against the University of Mobile in a 9-4 win before walking off the Rams in the nightcap 2-1 in extra innings Thursday afternoon at Billy Allgood Field.

Game 1 – Louisiana Christian 9, Mobile (Ala.) 4

After getting Mobile (0-2) in order to start the game, Louisiana Christian (3-0) jumped all over the Rams starting pitcher. With runners on first and second bases with one out, Harrison Waxley started a run of three-straight hits. His shot back up the middle brought home Braden McLin to open the scoring. Gavin Vordick's hit to right-center scored Sterling Sims. Chris Kelley's single to right loaded the bases.

Luke Morgan's ground ball to shortstop was bobbled, allowing everyone to reach safely which included scoring Waxley. Caleb Brown followed with another base hit, this one through the right side of the infield which brought Vordick home. A wild pitch allowed Morgan to come home, giving LCU a 5-0 lead after just one inning of play.

Mobile pulled one back in the top of the second, only to see LCU add to the lead more in the bottom half. Vordick doubled over the right fielder's head to score Sims to get the run given up back. Kelley's fly ball to left allowed Braden Trull to tag up and score to make it 7-1 Wildcats after two.

McLin added to the lead in the third as he found the hole between shortstop and third for a base hit which allowed Brown to come home and make it 8-1.

Waxley added some insurance in the fourth with his first home run of the season to left-center, a solo shot which made it 9-1 Wildcats.

From there, the Rams scored one run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings each, but LCU would not allow Mobile to truly threaten a rally to get back in the game.

McLin, Waxley, Vordick, and Brown all had two hits in the first game of the twin bill. McLin went two for four with a stolen base, a run scored, and a RBI. Waxley was also two-for-four with the home run, two RBI, and two home runs. Vordick was two-for-four with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Brown went two-for-three with a RBI and a run scored.

Brandon Carter (1-0) picked up the win as he threw the first four inning and gave up five hits, two runs, both earned, walked two, and struck out one.

Alan Mason threw 2.1 innings of relief, giving up four hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and no walks.

Colton Williams closed out the win, getting both batters he faced out to end the contest, one by the way of strikeout.

Game 2 – Louisiana Christian 2, Mobile (Ala.) 1 (9 innings)

The nightcap was every bit a pitcher's dual as both teams struggled to string hits together.

After getting out of a two-on, no out jam in the top of the fourth inning, LCU finally dented the scoreboard in the right off the bat in the bottom half as Kelley found a pitch he liked and drove it over the wall in left-center for a lead-off home run to give the Wildcats the lead.

That 1-0 lead was one strike away from holding up in the bottom of the seventh inning for a win, only for Mobile to get a RBI double that just got over McLin's head in center field and to the wall to tie the score. LCU was able to get the third out two batters later, keeping the score tied and 1-1.

After LCU wiggled out of a runner on second, one out jam in the top of the ninth, the Wildcats were able to find the run needed to walk it off in the bottom half. With one out, McLin was hit by a pitch. He moved to second on Brady Huffman's slow chopper on the infield. After Trull was hit by a pitch, Waxley came through as he belted a sinking liner into left which dropped and McLin raced all the way home for the game-winner.

Trull and Brown were the only Wildcats with multiple hits in the nightcap. Trull went two-for-four and was hit by a pitch while Brown went two-for-three.

Kelley's one hit in the game was his third home run of the season, accounting for his one RBI and run scored in the game.

Waxley was one-for-five with the game-winning RBI.

McLin was one-for-four, stole a base, and scored the walk-off run.

Colton Williams (1-0) picked up the win as the threw the final two innings and gave up just one hit and no runs, walking two and striking out two Ram hitters.

Kade Linn got the start and threw four innings, giving up just one hit while striking out seven and walking three.

Thomas Collins threw 1.2 innings and didn't give up any hits and runs, walking three and striking out three as well.

Sterling Sims went 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run, which was earned, struck out three and walked one.

The Wildcats and Rams play two more on Friday to wrap up their four-game set. First pitch of Friday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Billy Allgood Field.
