LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana — The McNeese State Cowboys demonstrated formidable strength and strategy as they defeated Louisiana Christian 54-9 during the regular season opener for both teams this past weekend in Lake Charles, La.
The Wildcats opened the scoring early with a field goal by
Levi Hilborn, but that was the peak of their scoring streak. Responding after that field goal, McNeese's Bryce Strong garnered two touchdowns, igniting a series of scores that left the Wildcats trailing at halftime with a score of 38-9.
The Cowboys' offense continued to roll with touchdowns from Strong and Marquez Davis, further widening the gap. The defensive end was no less potent, securing a safety in the fourth quarter that bolstered the final score to 54-9 in favor of the Cowboys.
Contributing to the La. Christian scoring efforts were
Levi Hilborn and
Bryce Perkins, the former contributing the initial field goal and Perkins the sole touchdown for the Wildcats.
Despite the defeat, notable efforts from visiting players such as
Jaterrius Johnson with 31 rushing yards,
Phillip Jones II amassing 117 passing yards, and strong defensive gameplay from
David Voorhies III and Tonny Mixon.
The Wildcats will open Sooner Athletic Conference action as Louisiana Christian will travel to Langston, Oklahoma., to take on the Lions this coming Saturday in a 6 p.m. start.
