Diamond Cats Score 2nd-Most Runs In Program History, Hit Two Grand Slams

PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University baseball program hit more grand slams in a span of two innings than they did in the 48 previous games combined and were 180 feet shy of tying a 105-year-old school record as the LCU defeated Texas College by a final score of 25-4 in seven innings during game two on Friday.

The +21 margin of victory is tied for the most ever in 87 seasons of Wildcats baseball with a 21-0 win over the Steers on March 4, 2022 and the 25 runs scored by the Orange and Blue was the second-highest total dating back to its debut as a varsity sport in 1912, trailing only a 26-6 torching of the Louisiana Normal Demons (now Northwestern State) on-campus at Cotsie Field on May 13, 1920.

It was the second time that the Cats piled up 20 or more hits this campaign (22 vs. Southwest), 11 different players scored multiple times as 13 touched the plate in total, 10 student-athletes logged at least one RBI, and 13 separate student-athletes picked up a base knock.

The second (8 runs) and third (10 runs) innings were especially damaging with the latter being the first double-digit frame since 2023.

Wildcats Top Performers:

  • The two grand slams came from Braden McLin and Caleb Duhon, the first of both of their careers, while the two big boppers each set career-highs for RBIs as well at five and four, respectively.

                        * They combined for nine RBIs, five runs, four hits, two homers, a stolen base, and a walk while going 4-for-5 (.800).

  • The pitching staff did not need to do much given the abundance of run support as Coleman Haltom got the victory (4-1) with four innings of two-run work, followed by a scoreless frame by Colton Williams and then Harrison Waxley closed out a scoreless seventh, the first two hurlers notching two strikeouts apiece.

  • Harrison Waxley was a perfect 3-of-3 to lead the team in hits with a quartet of ribbies alongside his two doubles and sacrifice fly.

  • While walks may not be as flashy of a stat, it was still worth noting that two members of the Pineville Nine drew more than one, which were Brady Sers and Jake Messina, each doing so twice with Sers also joining the hit parade.

  • Adrian Aguilar stole his 40th base under Coach Byrnes tutelage and is on the doorstep of a much bigger milestone heading into the regular season finale, needing just one knock to join the elusive 200-hit club after going 2-for-4 in the blowout.

Next:

  • The men from Pineville will earn the sixth seed in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament with a win Saturday at noon over TC coupled with at least one loss by the University of the Southwest in their three-game series at Texarkana this weekend.
